Newfoundland and Labrador, notably the island of Newfoundland, has been likened to Suicune by a fan of the Pokémon series recently. If you’ve ever been to Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, you may have noticed a striking resemblance to legendary water-type Pokémon Suicune. If you’re lucky, you could have a chance to get a glimpse of Suicune, the most elusive Pokémon in the series. Suicune is a highly sought-after addition to any trainer’s team because of its elusiveness and special abilities (it can purify water simply by walking through it).
In many cases, gamers are skilled at navigating virtual worlds. In games like Red Dead 2’s fictional southwestern the United States or the recently released Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s regional geography of the Sinnoh region, players are frequently traversing vast distances. Occasionally, these maps conjure up images from other media, like comic books. A Grand Theft Auto V player noticed in the early days of September that the city of San Andreas in the game resembles Homer Simpson.
According to 1mpish420 on Reddit, there is a real-world map that looks like Suicune. In the easternmost portion of Canada, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador includes the island of Newfoundland, which 1mpish420 compared the appearance of Suicune to. With the Northern Peninsula functioning as Suicune’s crystal shard forehead, the island’s shape is uncannily similar to the Water-type Pokémon’s side profile. A minor dip in the island’s westernmost region appears to mirror Suicune’s nose and chin, which in turn creates Suicune’s purple flowing mane on the remainder of the island’s landscape.
1mpish420’s analogy to Newfoundland’s strong Suicune-like appearance was appreciated by fellow Reddit members (and clear Pokémon enthusiasts). Commenters from Newfoundland and Labrador also made it clear that they were from the province in one of their posts “As long as I’ve lived here, I never noticed this resemblance. This made me laugh out loud.” “This is my homeland, how did I never notice?” exclaimed another.
Even though there are more than 900 Pokémon in existence, 1mpish420’s comparison of Suicune and Newfoundland is uncannily accurate. In the future, there may be even more map-Pokémon similarities, given there are so many Pokémon with diverse appearances (from the beautiful and ethereal to the weird and confusing).
