In an attempt to fix a bug with the game’s tax system, the makers of New World accidentally handed users massive amounts of in-game currency. The developers of Amazon Games’ enormous multiplayer online game New World unintentionally handed up to 300,000 gold to some EU server gamers. After garnering hundreds of thousands of players when it first launched on PC in September 2021, New World’s player count plummeted by roughly two-thirds. After the game’s global release, developers are still dealing with a slew of difficulties that are affecting players and servers in the MMORPG.
MMOs are notorious for having issues and glitches when they first come out, and Amazon’s New World is no exception. New World’s vast list of problems includes gold duplication glitches, random character invincibility, and unbalanced opponent encounters, to name a few. Since then, further updates have attempted to address these issues, but the fixes have frequently resulted in more errors.
According to PCGamer, Amazon Games had to roll back their New World’s core EU server to correct a severe error. The MMORPG’s creators accidentally awarded up to 300,000 gold – New World’s currency – to random users. Originally, the patch was supposed to address an issue with players’ unintentional tax losses. However, the distribution did not go according to plan. Players were then accidentally handed significant sums of in-game money, according to the New World team in a blog post, “extremely large numbers not reflective of the intended amounts.” Players who received these unintended presents immediately spent them on high-end game items from the game’s trading post, severely disrupting the game’s economic dynamics. Developers went on to say that the only way to fix the situation (without causing more problems) was to roll back the server to before the gold was given away.
The core EU server fell offline after gamers reported the problem. It was finally restored with trading postings, and player-to-player trading switched off within a few hours. However, players that attempted to transfer during the server’s downtime had a “character restore failure” status as a result of the rollback. Amazon Games took a few days to remedy these difficulties, and maintenance has now been finished. The trading posts of the New World, as well as mountains of unintentionally gifted riches, have been returned to their rightful place.
In the months following its debut, Amazon Games’ maiden foray into the game world encountered a number of issues. However, it appears that Amazon Games is attempting to please its players by fixing bugs and introducing new content to New World. Although these attempts appear to be causing the developers more problems, only time will tell if the newest MMORPG on the block will be able to keep its position in the realm of modern online gaming.
