A group of fans is presently working on an unofficial remake of Final Fantasy IX, which has already received a lot of attention thanks to an outstanding teaser trailer that was released yesterday.
A creative group of fan developers has just released a visually amazing trailer for an unofficial Final Fantasy IX remake, which you can watch below. As a result of last year’s long-awaited and well-received Final Fantasy VII Remake, there have been other such passion projects, including one that remastered 2001’s legendary Final Fantasy X in full 4K resolution, which was released last month on PlayStation 4.
Final Fantasy IX, which was first released on the original PlayStation in 2000, featured the storey of a young thief named Zidanne Tribal and his colourful crew of misfits as they battled to preserve the world of Gaia from the evil Kuja and the troops of Queen Brahne. Final Fantasy IX, in contrast to previous sequels such as Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII, reverted to a more whimsical mediaeval setting and featured a tone that was a little more lighter. Final Fantasy IX, despite not being as well-known as the Final Fantasy games that came before it or the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy X that came after it, still has a small but devoted following among fans of Square Enix’s long-running JRPG mega-franchise, despite its lack of mainstream appeal. As it turns out, Zidanne and his pair of Mage Masher daggers have made a slew of cameo appearances in various Final Fantasy spin-offs over the years, including the Dissidia Final Fantasy series.
Dan Eder, a computer-generated web artist, posted a very astounding trailer for a Final Fantasy IX fan remake on his YouTube channel yesterday. Despite the fact that it would only be a non-playable proof of concept rather than a full-on remake due to copyright considerations, this passion project, titled Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project, was unveiled earlier this year. Still, Eder observes that his team of experienced engineers and artists has grown from two to 28 in the months since the Memoria Project was initially revealed, a significant increase from the original two. In the recently released Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project – Welcome to Alexandria teaser trailer, the young amnesiac mage Vivi is seen wandering the streets of Alexandria near the opening of Final Fantasy IX, which was rendered entirely with real time in Unreal Engine 5.
However, while Square Enix hasn’t officially confirmed a Final Fantasy IX remake in the vein of last year’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, the possibility of such a project was hinted to in a list of probable games coming to Nvidia GeForce graphics cards earlier this month. There were more rumoured titles included in this leak, including Mortal Kombat 12, The Elder Scrolls VI, and Hogwarts Legacy. This was only the second major leak of Nvidia’s servers. Moreover, Square Enix has hinted that it may be returning to the planet of Gaia in a hypothetical Final Fantasy IX sequel following the completion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, and a Final Fantasy IX animated series was revealed back in June.
There is no denying that fans would like to return to the colourful world of Gaia and reunite with classic characters such as Zidanne, Vivi, Freya, and others, regardless of whether Square Enix is truly working on a remake of Final Fantasy IX, as indicated by this month’s Nvidia GeForce leak suggests. Fortunately, Dan Eder and his team are presently working on the unofficial and non-playable Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project, which appears to be progressing very smoothly based on the teaser trailer that was released just a few hours ago.
