The Otsutsuki form allows Boruto tap into the massive chakra reservoir of Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s spirit, but what price must he pay for greatness? On most days, Boruto is the wrong ninja to deal with, even more so than his father Naruto. Not only is he blessed with the genetic powers that his father and mother handed on to him, but he has also developed a range of skills unique to his own circumstances. Even with these powers, Boruto is perhaps more over-powered than typically imagined via the Kama seal, a special connection he has to his father and mentor’s former foe, Momoshiki Otsutsuki.
Boruto received the abilities of the Kama seal during the battle to save his father and others from Otsutsuki. Although Boruto was able to overcome Otsutsuki, before his ultimate capitulation, Otsutsuki hexed Boruto by inscribing a Kama seal on his palm. While the Kama seal allows Boruto to harness energies beyond his current capabilities, Otsutsuki’s objective was not to aid him, but rather to construct a way for his eventual reincarnation.
Through the Kama seal, Otsutsuki’s spirit was sealed in Boruto, much like the Nine-Tails Beast was bound in his father, Naruto. However, the effect is far more subtle in the case of Otsutsuki. Whereas the Nine-Tails Beast had to negotiate a power-sharing existence with Naruto, Otsutsuki has full, albeit latent control of Boruto. While the Kama seal grants Boruto incredible powers, such as the capacity to absorb the chakra of an opponent, it redirects a portion of that energy to Otsutsuki. It also diminishes Boruto’s capacity to keep Otsutsuki’s spirit in stasis.
In other words, every time Boruto uses the power of the Kama seal, he shortens the period where Otsutsuki’s soul will strive to seize full control over Boruto. In addition to providing Boruto the capacity to have endless energy, it also provides him master-level skill in any jutsu he has already completed and the jutsu of anyone whose chakra he has sucked off. Once awakened, the Otsutsuki form not only offers Boruto access to the great world of jutsu but also allows Otsutsuki to combine his own experiences and techniques into Boruto’s skill level.
The power of the Otsutsuki form can manifest without Boruto’s participation. Whenever Otsutsuki’s soul believes that Boruto is in deadly danger it will instantly appear. This ability is predicated on the fact that the Kama seal also develops a tacit survival mechanism in Otsutsuki to preserve Boruto from dying before his rebirth. Indeed, if Boruto dies prior to his return, Otsutsuki would lose access to the host necessary to permit his return.
Whether the powers of the Otsutsuki form are called upon by Boruto or occur as a survival method, its abilities are real and magnificent. In essence, it allows Otsutsuki to take possession of Boruto’s body and combine his force with Boruto’s powers and skills. For instance, it can tap into Boruto’s dojutsu Jogan talents to track and trace the chakra flows of others. With this knowledge, the Boruto-Otsutsuki combination can identify the individual with the highest reserve of chakra and target them as a source to siphon chakra from to power up.
What makes Boruto’s Otsutsuki form so horrifyingly powerful? Once it is activated, it produces a dual-threat opponent who may either rely on Boruto’s natural powers, Otsutsaki’s “from beyond the grave” powers, or a mix of both. Whatever the phase, the Otsutsuki form makes Boruto a hard force to conquer in battle. While it has not appeared much, it appears that it is set to make its return with terrible results.
