Chainsaw Man realizes that his dreams won’t come true and creates a frightening coping mechanism. He then lives out his fantasies in complete delusion.
Chainsaw Man is only known to those who have seen the anime trailer. Those who don’t know the manga may think Denji is a mindless slasher. He is in a sense, especially when he transforms. He’s a child with a simple dream. Denji begins to realize that he might never be able to achieve his dream, and he creates a coping mechanism that is quite disturbing.
Chainsaw Man’s very first episode finds Denji living in severe poverty and destitution. Denji is forced to live in poverty and destitution because his father died in debt. The amount of money that he owes is so large that Denji lives solely on the ability to repay it.
He is unable to enjoy the things that normal teenagers take for granted and he doesn’t have enough money to make ends meet. Denji has a simple dream. He wants a girlfriend and good food. This seems unlikely until he meets Public Safety Devil Hunter Makima. Denji is Chainsaw Man within him and Makima believes he would make an amazing asset.
Denji is a Devil Hunter and eats only fresh, unspoiled food. He also sleeps in a real bed. He still needs a girl. He is so infatuated by Makima that he vows that she will always be his first girlfriend. He is a Devil Hunter since that day and everything he does from then on is in the service of this.
Makima seems to have these feelings for a while, but it isn’t until it happens. Chapter 82 reveals that Makima only cared about Denji the Chainsaw Man within her. She then became angry at Denji and became the cause of all the bad things that happen to him in the manga.
