Similarities to current events or an unconscious reiteration of a national mood can give a new film an instant spike in popularity. The needle drop is where “After Blue (Dirty Paradise)” gets its inspiration. In the latest psychedelic science fiction maximum effort from French auteur Bertrand Mandico, the villain’s name is “Kate Bush,” and it’s mentioned at least a hundred times. It’s timed well for US audiences, too, since the real Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Contract with God)” became a surprise #1 on iTunes after being included in the 2022 season of “Stranger Things.”If a new Kate fan is sent to “After Blue” by a keyword algorithm, they won’t learn anything about the “Wuthering Heights” singer from the movie. Agata Buzek, aka Katarzyna Buzowska, plays “Kate Bush,” a rogue vigilante with an eyeball in her vagina who wreaks havoc on the planet of the same name after being unearthed by a teenage girl named Roxy (Paula Luna) from the pink, foamy sand in which she was buried as punishment by the all-female Polish space military.

(The film’s apparent prejudice towards the Poles is just one of many mysteries surrounding it.) To serve their penance, Roxy and her mother Zora (Elina Löwensohn) must traverse perilous, wintry terrain and wait for “Kate Bush” within an extraterrestrial mine shaft. There, they must put an end to her life and atone for their role in bringing tragedy to the French-speaking inhabitants of After Blue. The storyline of this two-hour-plus mashup of science fiction, fantasy, and the Western serves mostly as a peg for Mandico to hang his many aesthetic and sensual preoccupations. Hold on a second, however. One of the first things you hear in “After Blue” is the soothing purr of a voice saying, “You are no longer on your planet. While a funky sphere with jewel tones spins in the dusty abyss, the words “You are in space” flash across the screen. As if a caveat like that were necessary, the post-Earth colony inhabited by human “ovarian carriers” (those without ovaries die shortly after birth, choking on their own hair—again, don’t ask) where our narrative takes place does appear like it was designed by a die-hard Kate Bush fan.
The landscape is strewn with crystals, and glitter clings to the thick hair that covers everyone’s neck and shoulders, giving the impression that bovine animals with geode faces prowl the countryside. (Hairstyles are a major plot point.) The people of After Blue wear all-black witchy garb that mashes together elements from American Horror Story: Coven and Female Prisoner Scorpion. As humanity settled on After Blue, they prohibited all technology, making the film’s lone male-like figure, a designer pleasure bot named Olgar-2 (Michal Erpelding), a potentially lethal piece of contraband. Aliens’ trees drip with sensual ooze, while neon and blacklight paint is put to novel and visually pleasing use. If you like wearing floppy hats and hefty geode jewellery, you’ll feel right at home here, since the atmosphere is reminiscent of both a metaphysical store and the iconic French sci-fi artist Moebius. Unfortunately, the character growth and story arc in “After Blue” don’t live up to the level of detail that was placed into the setting.

To be fair, a film in which the protagonists spend a significant amount of time smoking at dinner parties and talking about how art has to be liberated from the restrictions of traditional morality before making out in a hot tub is very French. To give you a better picture of what we’re dealing with, the hot tub is constructed from the bisected body of a megalithic extraterrestrial monster whose heated viscera are reportedly beneficial for the skin. Although “After Blue” markets itself as a science fiction/fantasy epic, it ultimately feels little and insignificant despite its length, complexity, and several sophisticated locations. Nothing can be held against the film’s art crew, whose dedication to their craft shines through in inventive sets and costumes that belie the film’s modest budget. The fault here is in Mandico’s screenplay, which has pacing flaws that elongate the superfluous parts of the plot while giving less weight to the vitally crucial ones.

It’s more entertaining to talk about “After Blue” than it is to watch it, suggesting that perhaps it might work better as an art installation than a narrative film. On the other hand, describing it is a blast. You know, we forgot to explain that Roxy smokes cigarettes that wriggle like caterpillars when you fire them, and that Olgar-2’s penis has tentacles like a squid.
