A film in which Adam Driver battles a host of dinosaurs seems like it would be everything but dull, yet “65” manages to do just that. The movie would have been better off with a lot more stupidity. Costing an estimated $91 million to produce, the film was advertised during the Super Bowl, yet it should have been more like a B-movie. Instead, it tries to balance a wild survival narrative with a heartfelt family drama, but it does a poor job of either because of how quickly it moves and how little development it gives each element. There’s no depth to these people, and the constant action becomes tedious and boring very fast. There’s a start, some ominous music plays, people flee and scream and perhaps get hurt, and then they barely make it out of there alive. Repeatedly and repeatedly. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, whose previous work includes co-writing “A Quiet Place” with John Krasinski, write and create a film with a seemingly incongruous concept. The story is set 65 million years in the past, although advanced societies may have already lived on other worlds. One has Driver in the role of Mills, a space pilot.

In order to pay for his sick daughter’s medical care, he is preparing to go on a two-year exploratory trip (the film’s prologue and random video clips include Chloe Coleman from “My Spy”). Unfortunately for Mills, his ship unexpectedly hits an asteroid field, is torn to bits, and crashes on the route to its destination. His daughter’s age range is covered by the passengers who die in cryogenic slumber, save for one. Ariana Greenblatt portrays the character of Koa. It turns out that Earth is a planet with a landscape very similar to Dagobah’s swamps.
In order to escape the dinosaurs in “65,” Mills and Koa must trudge from the debris to a mountainside, where an escape pod is located. The creatures have the potential to frighten, but they also have moments where they appear as corny and phoney as the animatronics you’d find at Chuck E. Cheese. But nonetheless! If “65” had played with the inherent insanity of combining advanced technology with the Cretaceous age, it may have been better, or at least more interesting.

But in this ancient context, they seldom come up with creative uses for Mills’ high-tech devices. Moments of risk are resolved too neatly for us to revel in their tension, and the few efforts at comedy fall flat (mostly consisting of Koa poking fun of Mills for being uptight). The worst part is that Driver doesn’t have enough comedic leeway. He’s an intense actor, which can be exhilarating or funny depending on whether he’s playing it straight or amping it up. Just picture him yelling “More!!!” while striking the wall in “Marriage Story” or Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” The hero he portrays in “65,” though, is unremarkable and merely irritated most of the time. Meanwhile, Greenblatt does her best with an unknowable figure. Koa can not understand English, so she communicates with Mills mostly by repeating the most basic phrases she hears him say, such as “family.” Since they have to spend so much time together, they haven’t developed any kind of meaningful relationship. This isn’t “The Last of Us,” though.

There are some nifty moments of camerawork and editing from Beck and Woods, but they can also be a bit sloppy. A gigantic footprint in the dirt or a dinosaur’s yellow eye peering menacingly through a window is just two examples of the many elements they have lifted from the “Jurassic Park” series. But, perhaps that’s the way things have to go now. Their picture is only mildly entertaining until the final act, when a stealthy quicksand patch, a voracious Tyrannosaurus rex, a well-timed geyser explosion, and a devastating meteor shower all come together. When it happens, it will be too late for humanity and the earth.
In cinemas as of this writing.
