In the latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, Sukuna stabs Hana Kurusu, likely killing her, after tricking her into thinking Megumi had expelled him. Yuji observes, clearly horrified, but helpless to intervene. Yet, Sukuna is taken aback when he puts up a valiant battle with a level of strength that not even the King of Curses anticipated he would possess. Sukuna pokes fun at Yuji, saying that he doesn’t get how the human race can believe they were created to be happy when they are so frail. Yuji, his anger rising, tells Sukuna he doesn’t see how beings like him can exist without bringing pain to others. After taking a punch from Yuji, Sukuna is surprised by how resilient he is. Yet he quickly learns that it isn’t Yuji who is powerful, but rather his own dwindling stores of cursed energy. Megumi is still fighting Sukuna and is currently attempting to prevent him from assaulting Yuji, which is good news for everyone who was beginning to worry that he might be dead.

As time went on, he concluded that Yuji lacked the necessary strength, and he saw a gradual decline in the amount of Cursed Energy he was producing. The fact that Yuji was able to get a good punch in on Sukuna after he cursed out Megumi suggests that Yuji’s host had already awoken and shut down the cursed energy production in an effort to protect him.
