The most recent chapter of One Piece saw the return of a previously featured character who is both powerful and pivotal to the plot. When Monkey D. Garp showed up out of nowhere at the end of Chapter 1071, it got people excited. Even now, Garp holds the record for the strongest Marine of all time. When he was at the height of his powers, he could hold his own against the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. To this day, Garp is still a top-tier level character despite his advanced age. Garp was all set to go after his favourite apprentice Koby, whom Blackbeard had stolen, in One Piece chapter 1071. Therefore, it appears that the Marine Hero will receive a great deal of attention. Aside from Zoro, Monkey D. Garp is the most powerful Marine in the whole One Piece canon.
Exactly who is this Garp character, anyway?
Garp plays a pivotal role in the show. In actuality, he is the biological grandpa of Monkey D. Luffy and the adoptive grandfather of both Monkey D. Dragon and Portgas D. Ace. Before sending Ace and Luffy to the Dadan Family, he supervised their early development. Garp was a major player in the Golden Age of Piracy with Kong, Sengoku, Shiki, Silvers Rayleigh, Gol D. Roger, and Whitebeard. His achievements brought him great fame and status, and he soon became one of the most infamous figures in the One Piece universe.
Many times throughout his career, Garp was offered the promotion to the rank of Admiral because of his great abilities. The proposition was made to him repeatedly, but he always declined. This is why he never became a Full Admiral and instead stayed a Vice Admiral.
Sometime towards the beginning of the present retelling of One Piece, Garp made Koby and Helmeppo his followers and assumed responsibility for their education. Garp joined the Marines and became an instructor after the Paramount War. Despite this, he was still able to keep his Vice Admiral rank and serve the Marine Corps in several capacities.
Garp is one of the most formidable protagonists in the history of One Piece
Due to his many accomplishments, Roger became known as the King of Pirates and sparked the Great Piracy Era. Roger’s Haki gave him superhuman strength. It was clear that in a battle, Monkey D. Garp could hold his own against even the King of Pirates. More than time, Garp allegedly backed Roger into a corner. Their fights were so fierce that they came dangerously close to murdering each other multiple times. Roger and Garp were enemies, yet they still had mutual regard for one another. They worked together 38 years before the story’s present events during the God Valley incident to vanquish a shared foe: the deadly Rocks D. Xebec, who the World Government as a whole dreaded.
The accomplishment solidified Garp’s status as the “Marine Hero” of all time. To further prove his superiority, Garp just required one punch to overcome the legendary pirate Don Chinjao, who possessed the combined might of his Armament Haki and his physical strength to split a continent with a headbutt. Because of this decisive victory, Garp was forever known as “The Fist” around the world. Insinuating that his fists pack a serious wallop is the point of this nickname. In preparation for his fight against Chinjao, Garp claimed that he demolished eight mountains during his training. Chinjao claims that Garp was universally feared by the pirate crew. Whitebeard, the Strongest Man in the World and one of the Four Emperors has publicly proclaimed his admiration for Garp’s prowess in battle.
A 76-year-old man who had long since passed his physical peak, Garp nonetheless had the upper hand against Whitebeard’s trusted lieutenant, Marco. Garp outmanoeuvred him with a single hop. He then punched Marco, doing some damage despite Marco’s healing skills.
Garp, even in his advanced years, can still throw iron cannonballs with the same ease as a baseball and at speeds that exceed those achieved by a genuine cannon. Furthermore, he is capable of carrying and launching an iron ball far larger than the Thousand Sunny. Similarly to Whitebeard, an enraged Garp can still get stronger. After killing Ace, Garp nearly murdered Akainu if Sengoku hadn’t restrained him.
It is yet to be determined how proficient Haki Garp actually is. Even yet, Garp is probably a powerful Haki user, just like the Pirate King, considering that he was able to battle on equal terms with Roger, who wielded an insanely strong Haki. Despite his defiant nature, Garp has reached a level of prominence that even the Celestial Dragons won’t risk eliminating from their ranks. Kuzan, the former Admiral Aokiji, and many other notable Marines have credited him as a mentor, earning him a great deal of respect in the Corps. Even though Koby and Helmeppo were initially complete weaklings, they were able to develop into dependable Marine officers thanks to Garp’s guidance. Garp was essential in Koby’s development as a proficient Haki user.
Because of his independence and charisma, Garp is an engaging character. Despite his odd behaviour, Garp is a kind and kind individual. It’s impressive that he can remain true to both his criminal family and the Marine Corps. Interestingly, in many ways, Garp resembles his grandson, right down to dozing off in the middle of a discussion and forgetting what was just spoken. Roger came to see Garp as a friend on par with the rest of his crew after many bloody encounters. Roger asked Garp to look after his kid Ace after turning himself into the Marines. Even Garp, who admired Roger, gave in to his dying request. As Ace was being killed for piracy, Garp began sobbing, pleading with him to reconsider his career path and join the Marines instead. In conclusion, Garp has always been an independent thinker. Even though Roger was a pirate, he never developed any animosity against him. Garp is not beyond breaking the rules in order to protect the things he cares about most, including his freedom and his family.
For instance, he waited to be commanded to arrest Luffy in Water Seven. He let Luffy punch him in the face so he could act hurt and liberate Ace. It’s clear that Garp’s family is more important to him than his responsibilities in the Marine Corps. Even when doing his job, Garp is guided by his moral compass. Sengoku claims that this is why Garp turned down the position of Admiral — he didn’t want to be responsible for protecting the Celestial Dragons. The fact that SWORD member Koby reports directly to Garp makes it seem likely that Garp is at least aware of the covert organisation. Though he may be employed by the World Government, Garp may not be eager to go to war with his grandson, Luffy.
It’s true that Garp had doubts about which side to take during the Paramount War, and that his uncertainty contributed to Ace’s untimely demise. Many One Piece viewers concluded that, given his close relationship with Sengoku, the former Fleet Admiral must also be a member of SWORD if Garp is. In Chapter 1071 of One Piece, Garp sailed to Hachinosu, the island where the Blackbeard Pirates are headquartered, with two SWORD members, Helmeppo and Hibari. Clearly, Garp’s goal is to defeat Blackbeard and free Koby. But the mission doesn’t look like a walk in the park, not even for the Marine Hero.
On Hachinosu, will Garp and Blackbeard engage in combat?
The future of Garp’s struggle with the Blackbeard Pirates is murky at the present. Though Garp is on his way to Hachinosu, Teach is still on Winner Island, where he is engaged in the battle against Trafalgar Law. To be fair, it is anticipated that Teach would easily dispatch Law. Even if Law is a formidable pirate in his own right, he shouldn’t be able to challenge Luffy’s mortal enemy beyond a certain point in a direct confrontation. Consequently, it’s probable that Blackbeard will soon prevail in battle and sail back to Hachinosu. Therefore, he would run into Garp at that location. Story-wise, it’s difficult to picture Blackbeard losing to Garp at this time in One Piece. A while back, Rayleigh successfully scared Blackbeard off of Amazon Lily. However, the “Dark King” himself conceded that owing to his advanced age, he would not have been able to win one-on-one combat to the death with Teach.
Conclusion
Like Rayleigh, Garp is a legend from the early days of One Piece, and as such, he faces the same difficulty. They may have been formidable opponents to Blackbeard when they were at their peak, but that shouldn’t be expected of them today. But it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t put up fierce resistance to him. Because of the potential danger of confronting Rayleigh, Blackbeard ultimately decided to abandon his original plan and leave Amazon Lily. However, it appears like a showdown with Garp is inevitable this time around, since Garp is determined to rescue Koby from Blackbeard’s grasp.
Even more so, Blackbeard’s crewmen, including Shiryu, are not to be taken lightly. One Piece readers are excited to see what happens between Blackbeard and Garp after Oda’s recent claims about an upcoming spectacular confrontation. Fans have long anticipated a two-on-two showdown between Blackbeard and Shiryu and Garp and Aokiji. Blackbeard’s apparent new ally, the former Admiral, is sure to turn against him. In all honesty, it’s hard to see Aokiji ever teaming up with someone so evil.
