Recap of Episode 12
Episode 12 of Blue Lock, aptly named “The Second Selection,” kicks off the preliminary selection process for the second time in the Blue Lock programme. After passing through the gates, Yoichi enters a square chamber and encounters Blue Lock Man, a synthetic soccer player. He has 90 minutes to score 100 goals against the Blue Lock Man in the opening round. The first phase is a training simulation in which Yoichi must make a split-second decision, sprint into a space that is getting smaller by the second, outwit the goalie, and score a goal. Yoichi says that in order to successfully utilise his unique weapon, he must be able to sense the ball’s speed and direction, quickly move toward the area where it would land, accurately judge the distance to the goalie, and strike the ball head-on.
This results in Yoichi’s first stage 2 goal being scored. However, once Yoichi scores 30 goals, he discovers that the difficulty of the second selection’s initial stage has decreased to level 2. The second level is much more challenging due to the increased number of guards.
Because of this, Yoichi knows that he can’t go on to the next phase until he undergoes another evolution. Anri explains that Germany’s best teams utilise the penalty area training room to improve their players’ explosive power and to simulate game circumstances according to each player’s specific skill set. In the training room, the artificial intelligence holographic goaltender Blue Lock Man is indispensable.
A microchip sensor within the ball allows for direct physical engagement with a hologram.
Anri is concerned about their budget despite their use of such cutting-edge holographic technology, but Jinpachi finally disregards her concerns. In a simulated penalty shootout, Yoichi scored 48 times in 40 minutes. When I reached 60 targets, the challenge suddenly became really hard. This time, Yoichi’s defenders were swerving all over the place, and the ball that got to him was suddenly quicker and spinning wildly. According to Jinpachi, a pretender will learn just how helpless he is at level max since he needs all three of physical strength, mental strength, and technique to complete the programme.
Yoichi learns in this challenging scenario that he has always had the backing of Kunigami, Bachira, and Chigiri and that their soccer talents are the reason he has been able to score goals. Yoichi is unsatisfied because he did not play the first round alone and would want to acquire the sort of power that allows him to battle without assistance. Yoichi thinks that all the balls that come to him from Bachira are unpredictable and difficult to make contact with, therefore he must make solid contact with the ball without considering Bachira’s prior passes if he wants to increase his goal output. On the other hand, just whacking the ball with no thought won’t go you very far. Yoichi gets another goal by concentrating all of his energy and focusing on the moment his shot hits the ball (this time using 70% of his total shooting power).
Yoichi finally makes it through the first round of the second selection, and he couldn’t be happier about everything that has transpired thus far at the gym. To advance to the next round of the second selection, each participant must create a trio in accordance with the regulations. Yoichi sees Nagi and Reo waiting for Zantetsu, while Bachira comes shortly after Yoichi. While Yoichi and Bachira are discussing forming a squad, Nagi unexpectedly approaches Yoichi and offers him to join his team instead. As was to be predicted, Yoichi turns down Nagi’s offer, but Nagi is adamant about wanting to work with Yoichi and Bachira instead of sticking with Reo. Nagi tells Reo that he wants to play soccer with him because he has to learn about his emotions following his loss of Yoichi.
While Reo is left behind, Yoichi, Bachira, and Nagi go to the next level. In the third stage, Yoichi’s squad faces Itoshi Rin’s team, and Jinpachi comes on screen to announce that the teams would be facing off in a situational fight of three-man teams in a minigame format. The team with the most goals wins, and Jinpachi tells them that the Blue Lock Man will be the goaltender for both teams. If the winning side can assemble a four-man squad by stealing a player from the losing team, they will progress to the fifth stage and clear the second selection. However, if the losing team does not win the two-on-two battle and is not selected by the victorious team, one of their remaining members will be eliminated. Thus, the second phase will be a struggle of rivals in which both sides would resort to theft to ensure their own survival. While Yoichi and his teammates debate whether to attack Rin, he observes that the trio can’t work together since they have such distinct personalities.
It turns out that the main reason Rin is at Blue Lock is to play for the U-20 national team and embarrass his excellent midfielder brother, Itoshi Sae, in front of his entire family because of soccer. He also claims that the other Blue Lock programme participants are insignificant stepping stones in his career and that he doesn’t give a hoot about them.
Before the episode closes, Yoichi tells Bachira and Nagi he’s sorry for challenging Rin’s squad in the first three-man soccer team match during the second selection’s third stage.
