What is the average salary of a Harvard law graduate?

It might be challenging to ascertain the average lawyer compensation per hour or by state, as well as the categories of lawyers who earn the most. According to Lawyer.com’s Guide to Legal Services and Billing Rates, clients often mistake a lawyer’s fees for her actual compensation. In actuality, they are not intrinsically linked. A lawyer may be paid in a variety of ways, depending on the client’s preference, including a retainer (an up-front fee) or a contingency fee (payment based on the outcome of the case). On the other hand, most attorneys receive a salary. An attorney’s compensation is not directly proportional to the amount of money brought in by clients or the time they spend on cases.

How Much Do Lawyers Make Per Hour and Per Year?
As of May 2019, the United States employed 657,170 attorneys, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook. The average yearly income for these attorneys was $122,960, or $59.11 per hour. Half of all earners made $186,350 or more, while the top 10% made over $208,000. The lowest 25% earned less than $80,950, while the lowest 10% earned less than $59,670. As the name implies, the median pay is the midway between the highest and lowest earnings in a certain occupation’s salary distribution.

Lawyer Wages in Each State
A lawyer’s annual salary, like that of most other professions, can vary widely from region to region. Generally speaking, persons practising law in the Northeast and the West make more than their counterparts in the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, and smaller cities. According to the BLS, the average income for a lawyer in the District of Columbia was $192,180 in May 2019, whereas the average compensation for a lawyer in California was $173,970. Attorneys in Arkansas made $94k a year, while their counterparts in Montana made $83.030. According to the ABA Profile of the Legal Profession 2020 income statistics, attorneys in San Jose made $218,420 and those in the San Francisco region made $188,910; in Washington, DC, they made $179,590; in Santa Fe, New Mexico, they made $95,710; and in Missoula, Montana, they made $74,940. Kokomo, Indiana has the lowest median household income in the United States, at $55,000.

How Much Money You Can Expect to Make in a Private Law Firm?
According to the ABA compensation profile, the median annual salary of a lawyer in private practice ranged from $90,000 to $1,040,000 in 2015. Though attorneys earned a median annual income of $145,000 in 2019, earnings at private law firms vary widely depending on the firm’s size. When comparing median first-year lawyer wages, companies with 50 or fewer attorneys paid $98,750, while those with 700 or more lawyers earned $180,000 or more, especially in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Washington, DC. After eight years of service, the majority of employees earn a median of $204,000 annually.

Analysis of Government Service
According to the BLS, the average pay for a lawyer working for the federal government is $144,300 per year, while the average salary for a lawyer working for a state government is $89,090 per year and the average salary for a lawyer working for a municipal government is $95,870 per year. Several different public sector positions’ median earnings were analysed by the National Association for Law Placement, Inc. (NALP), as were salaries for those with no experience and those with more than ten years of experience in the field. Beginning public defenders in 2019 might expect a median pay of $48,000 to $58,300, with much of this variation attributable to geographic factors. Those with 11-15 years of experience as public defenders in a given area made $96,400, while those as prosecutors made $84,400.

Forecasting Future Job Growth
Between 2019 and 2029, the BLS predicts 4% overall employment growth, which is on par with the average for all occupations. Despite the fact that some businesses may choose to outsource certain legal tasks to accountancy firms or paralegal services, the BLS anticipates that demand for legal services would remain stable. They also believe that customers would push for cheaper rates and tighter scrutiny of bills, which might lead to a reevaluation of workforce levels. On the other side, when funding permits, the government will presumably keep hiring public lawyers and prosecutors.
