Vehicle operators in South Carolina who are in the business of transporting people or goods must hold a commercial driver’s licence. The minimum age to apply for an intrastate CDL is 18, while the minimum age to apply for an interstate CDL or a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement is 21. Class A permits the operation of any vehicle combination with a GCWR greater than 26,000 pounds, provided that the GVWR of both the towing vehicle and the vehicle being towed is greater than 10,000 pounds. A Class B vehicle is one with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds, whether it be a single vehicle or a group of vehicles. It’s not safe to tow a car that weighs more than 10,000 pounds.
Class C vehicles are those that are either meant to carry 16 people or more (including the driver) or are used to transport hazardous items.
