Summary of Kaguya-sama: “Love Is War” Chapter 279
We dedicate this episode to Chika Fujiwara, one of the most recognisable anime heroines of all time. Kaguya learns from Chika Fujiwara that she has been invited out on a date in the last chapter. Kaguya is used to scaring away men who have romantic intentions toward her best friend, but Chika is eager to give dating a shot this time. A well-known musician has asked her out, saying that he hopes they may start a long-term relationship and even suggests that she come to Vienna with him. It all seems too wonderful to be true, and our suspicions are confirmed the further we read.
Chika seems a little too clinical in her description of her possible date. The offer seemed to be appealing primarily to her aesthetic sensibilities. At some point, Chika dares Kaguya to tell her she loves her and doesn’t want her to go on the date, and Kaguya accepts the challenge. Chika’s cancellation of the date suggests that she was too easily convinced, a sentiment many who have searched for “the one” may identify. Chika says that the suddenness of the date she just cancelled made her desire a slow-burn romance.
Following this, the narrator states that Fujiwara’s concept of love is not limited by either sex, possibly confirming what many fans have thought for a long: that Chika is gay. Not much happened in this current chapter to alter or otherwise advance Chika’s tale, but that may have been for the best. To have an LGBTQIA+ character that brings so much joy to so many people, and who is certain that she will remain terrific no matter what happens next, is just wonderful.
