Black Adam, produced by Warner Bros. and DC Films, launched with $140 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing premiere of all time. The superhero movie opened at $67 million in the United States, which was more than projected, and an additional $73 million from other markets. Black Adam has already been released in 76 countries across the world. It will be released in Japan on December 2. With $10.8 million coming from IMAX alone, premium formats contributed 33% of the opening weekend’s total.
With a reported budget of $195 million and direction by Jaume Collet-Serra, this is the highest domestic debut for a Dwayne Johnson picture outside of the Fast & Furious series.
Black Adam was the third-largest opening for a W.B. title during the pandemic era in Latin American regions. The film’s prolonged opening weekend in India, coincides with the Diwali vacation, resulting in earnings of $3.5 million. From the total worldwide sum, $2.2 million came from Malaysia, $2 million from Taiwan, and $1.4 million came from Indonesia. The sum of $1.1 million was earned in Singapore, while $1 million was earned in the Philippines. However, it failed to meet the international debuts of other DCEU films like Man of Steel ($190 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($422 million), Justice League ($278 million), and even this year’s standalone The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, which earned $258 million.
However, in comparable areas throughout the world, Black Adam is outperforming Shazam! The budget for that movie was reported $90 million, yet it did far better at the box office. Although Black Adam has received mixed reviews from critics, it has fared much better at the box office. On its opening day, viewers gave Black Adam a B+ CinemaScore, and the film presently has a 90% audience score on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes. Black Adam “may not be the hero the DCEU needs, but it’s a refreshing adjustment for this broader world and an exhilarating glimpse at the possibility moving ahead in this universe,” as reviewed by Ross Bonaime. It’s too soon to say if Black Adam will have the kind of legs that it requires to qualify as a bona fide smash, but it’s a good showing for a superhero movie that got middling reviews and doesn’t star a major comic book character.
In addition to Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate, Mo Amer, Bodhi Sabongu, and Sarah Shahi also feature with Johnson as Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Sabbac, and Cyclone, respectively. The film’s screenplay was written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, and was then directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Johnson, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Dany Garcia are the film’s producers; Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Chris Pan, Walter Hamada, Adam Schlagman, Geoff Johns, Eric McLeod, and Scott Sheldon serve as executive producers. The movie Black Adam has recently been released and is presently showing.
