According to Deadline, Lucasfilm has hired Damon Lindelof to produce and co-write a new, top-secret Star Wars film. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, best known as the director of the Ms Marvel films, will be involved. Lindelof, known for his work on highly acclaimed shows like Lost and The Leftovers and films like Prometheus and World War Z, has been tapped to produce and co-write the next instalment in the series.
Obaid-Chinoy has been hired on as director, and she has been given ample time to have her input included in the script at an early stage. Obaid-Chinoy has won both an Oscar and an Emmy for her work in television and cinema, and she has an extensive resume. Both A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (for which she shared the Oscar with David Junge) and Saving Face (for which she shared the Oscar with David Junge) were directed by the acclaimed Pakistani filmmaker, who also won Emmys in 2017 and 2013 for their respective Best Documentary: Short Subject categories.
There are a total of twenty-one prizes she has won thanks to her efforts, including Emmys for Pakistan’s Taliban Generation and Frontline/World. Currently, Obaid-Chinoy is attached to direct Paramount’s adaptation of Brilliance, starring Will Smith. She has already directed many episodes of Disney’s Ms Marvel series. In Hollywood, the making of the forthcoming Star Wars picture has been shrouded in mystery. The narrative summary, probable actors, and expected release date have not been announced. The script’s co-writers, including Lindelof, are still a mystery. Lucasfilm has suggested many films are in development in addition to Lindelof’s secret movie, and the company will not go forward with production work on any of them until they are satisfied with the narrative.
Since the release of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, in which Carrie Fisher reprised her role as Princess Leia after her death, the franchise has shifted its attention to its many television adaptations. The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor are just a few of the Star Wars shows on Disney +. The announcement of a new instalment in the franchise follows the delay of production on another Star Wars film. In 2020, it was reported that Patty Jenkins will be directing her own feature picture, Rogue Squadron, with a theatrical release scheduled for 2023.
In September, however, Disney revealed that they would not be moving further with the project at this time, instead continuing to prioritise television shows. The film’s narrative was to centre on a new generation of Rebels warriors, however, it was not revealed when in the Star Wars timeline the film would be set. Disney + now offers streaming access to all of the released films and spin-off programmes in the Star Wars franchise.
