In other words, we have returned to the world of the Man of Steel. This week, after years of conjecture, everyone was taken aback when Henry Cavill made a surprise appearance in the film Black Adam after the credits rolled. That quick appearance was not a fluke that has been established. Cavill confirmed his return to the role of Superman in upcoming DCEU films with an Instagram video. After presenting a photo of himself in the legendary costume, Cavill added in the video, “The picture you see in this post and what you saw at the conclusion of Black Adam are only a very little sample of what’s to come.”
After deliberating, he decided to wait to make the announcement until more people had watched the new Dwayne Johnson film for themselves and could judge its quality on their own. This is Cavill’s first appearance as Superman since Justice League in 2017. It was shocking to see him, but not totally unexpected given his history with Superman. Despite opposition from some at Warner Bros., rumours of his comeback have been swirling internally for some time. It’s also unlikely that any actor would have been as good a fit for the role of Superman as Henry Cavill.
Cavill has been the public face of Superman since his debut in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and he has subsequently reprised the role in Batman v. Superman and Justice League. Cavill was a consistent star in these films, and his return for Black Adam would set up a significant narrative between him and Johnson that would be a great windfall for the DCEU. Even though he’s been busy at Netflix with The Witcher and Enola Holmes, Cavill has said for a long time that he wants to reprise the role of Superman, so this is good news for him as well. He will restore peace and order to the DC Universe, which sorely needs it.
It seems as though, throughout David Zaslav’s presidency, only negative news has been reported. One option to gain back support is to add a fan-favourite celebrity like Cavill, who can be the protagonist in many storylines to come. Cavill has a lengthy history with Superman and should mesh well with DC’s other A-listers. Cavill makes a brief appearance towards the film’s conclusion as Superman, giving viewers a sneak peek at him in his old role.
