The interesting new trailer for 1899, a new show from Dark creators Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, has just been released on Netflix. The latest trailer provides some enigmatic new hints about the series’ upcoming ocean liner-based mystery. On November 17, 2022, 1899 will make its Netflix debut after winning the TIFF Primetime Program Competition.
The new series is a mystery that takes place towards the end of the 19th century on an immigrant ship sailing from New York to Europe.
There are many different countries and socioeconomic strata represented among the ship’s passengers. These differences will soon dissolve as they see the Prometheus, a ship that inexplicably vanished into the night a few months prior to their ship’s voyage. Unusual events will quickly spread among the ship’s passengers like a curse after their ship encounters the sunken ship. Viewers get a preview of some secrets in the new trailer. The communication from the curiously deserted Prometheus enters the ship at the start of the trailer. The passengers in the upper classes congregate to talk about the incident and what should be done about the incoming message.
Should they veer off course to check if anything can be done to save the ship that most people believed to be sunk? Or should they simply ignore it? From the pitch-black ocean, the Prometheus cries out. The trailer depicts their trek to the Prometheus, beginning with flares flashing red in the pitch-dark, followed by a short boat ride to the debris and lamp-lit shots of empty bunks. When the trailer enters controlled anarchy, it depicts the full consequences of their encounter with Prometheus. Additionally, there are various hints that point to a more sinister conspiracy hidden beneath Prometheus. A man pulls a tiny black pyramid from his backpack, and a number of travellers from various backgrounds are depicted, each sporting a black triangle tattoo. The series’ upcoming mystery is hinted at in the trailer’s climactic conclusion.
Odar and Friese, who previously produced the Netflix series Dark, which aired for three seasons on the streaming service, are working on a follow-up with this series. Andres Pietschmann, Lucas Lyngaard, Miguel Bernardeau, Mathilde Ollivier, Aneurin Barnard, and Emily Beecham will all appear in the eight-part television series 1899.
