Starz renewed Power Book III: Raising Kanan for a third season before the second season even premiered, and now we know that the season two finale will introduce a new important character who will play a significant role in the third season. Tony Danza, a TV veteran, will play the role of Stefano Marchetti, the Godfather of New York City’s mob scene, in the Season 2 finale. Mike Curtis’s Kanan was raised by his cruel mother Raq (Patina Miller), who seems to have ruled the Queens drug market by the second season when Danza’s character is introduced. When it comes to the drug trade between the mafia and New York City, Marchetti is the most powerful guy in the city.
He controls the distribution of goods across the city, insists on being consulted by all pharmacies, and threatens legal action against any who defy him. Kanan’s blatantly ambitious mom is always looking to expand her domain, and Marchetti may present a fresh obstacle for her. Starz’s Power was a smash hit for 6 seasons, and its success spawned not one but three spin-offs, of which Raising Kanan is one. The series explores the backstory of Kanan, played by Cutis “50 Cent” Jackson, and is set in 1990s Queens, New York.
Season 1 opened with a young Kanan eager to join his family’s criminal business; however, by the conclusion of the season, he has begun to question his life’s purpose after accidentally killing Detective Howard, who he believes to be his biological father. Starz has been quite supportive of the show’s second season, which saw Kanan return to New York after escaping to Boston in the first. Danza, nominated for an Emmy, is famous for his parts in the iconic comedies Taxi and Who’s the Boss? Danza has had a career primarily on television, despite a few significant film roles. He first broke into the streaming industry with Hulu’s Theres… Johnny! He has since been in Netflix’s The Good Cop and Hulu’s There’s… Johnny! Danza has been keeping busy as of late, with a ‘Who’s the Boss?’ revival in the works at Amazon Freevee and the fantasy feature Darby Harper Wants You to Know scheduled for release on Hulu this Christmas season.
This week, Danza was also revealed to be joining the cast of And Just Like That…, the sequel to Sex and the City. Omar Epps, London Brown, Malcolm Mays, Hailey Kilgore, Joey Bada$$, and Shanley Caswell all have roles in Raising Kanan. In addition to executive producing alongside 50 Cent, Courtney A. Kemp, and Mark Canton, Sascha Penn also acts as the show’s creator and showrunner. While production on Season 3 has begun in Next York, Starz has not yet said when the new season will debut.
