The first promo for the new Netflix true-crime documentary series Murder in a Courtroom has been released. The streamer’s Indian Predator series of documentaries, of which this is the third episode, is coming to a close after just a few short months on the air.
Murder in a Courtroom, like its predecessors, depends heavily on theatrical re-enactments. The trailer doesn’t depend extensively on remarks this time, save for a few brief instances where people examine the moral implications of the events depicted.
Based on the true story of the 2004 vigilante assassination of Bharat Kalicharan (aka Akku Yadav), a man accused of being a serial rapist. As a form of retribution for Yadav’s decade-long reign of terror in a nearby slum, dozens of women are claimed to have stormed into a courtroom, armed with sharp weapons and stones, and murdered him. Yadav allegedly operated in the city of Nagpur, where he committed several atrocities against women without fear of repercussions and was mostly disregarded by the police. After learning that Yadav could be released on bail once more, the ladies resolved to take matters into their own hands, as recounted in a Guardian article.
Five women were reportedly arrested after Yadav’s lynching but released after protests around the city. It was social justice, not murder, a social activist was reported as stating in a 2004 article in The Telegraph. Scenes leading up to Yadav’s death are reenacted in the teaser. Women in saris and with knives are seen running in his direction. Even one of them seems to sprinkle red chilli powder in his eyes. They severed his ears with pliers. One woman may be heard saying, “They sliced his this and that” in the trailer. Another female witness comments, “He was intelligent, watchful.” At the very end of the trailer, a guy emerges and says, “They reduced him to ground meat.”
All credit for that goes to the ladies. Whether or whether women have the capacity to kill is a topic of debate. A number of people have questioned the level of preparation that went into the violent act. Based on what we see in the teaser, the show will also delve into mob psychology and vigilante justice. Another individual comes to the conclusion that the murder was premeditated and involved something “extremely weird” that has not yet been investigated. Indian Predator was billed as a “thrilling and suspenseful docu-series that aims to unravel the brains of some of India’s greatest killers” when it premiered last year. India’s first serial killer thriller, Indian Predator: The Butcher of Delhi, was published in July. Second, in September we saw the publication of Indian Predator: The Diary of a Serial Killer.
