Dumb Money, a new drama, has completed casting its stellar ensemble cast. In addition to Paul Dano, Shailene Woodley, Vincent D’Onofrio, Seth Rogen, Anthony Ramos, Dane DeHaan, Sebastian Stan, and Pete Davidson, Deadline has confirmed that America Ferrera has joined the cast. Dumb Money is a film adaptation of The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich, which tells the tale of how the Reddit forum r/WallStreetBets was instrumental in the downfall of one of the largest hedge funds in the world.
It depicts the “David versus. Goliath” struggle between a loosely organized group of private investors and online trolls who tried to short-squeeze GameStop and therefore alter the course of Wall Street. The book covers a strange few days during which financial giants strike back at the unexpected challengers who caused instant fortunes to be earned and lost. Ferrera’s recent years have been eventful on many fronts. She recently appeared in an episode of Apple TV+’s WeCrashed and will soon be seen opposite Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the next Barbie film.
She also provides her voice for the upcoming 2024 Disney/Pixar film Elio. Superstore, in which she starred as Amy Sosa, will end its run in 2021, therefore she is most recognized for that role at the moment. Gentefied, a Netflix comedy about three cousins who strive to salvage their dying grandfather’s taco store, was also created, executive produced and directed by Ferrera. She’ll be making her feature film directing debut with the Erika Sánchez novel adaptation I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, and she’s reuniting with the streamer for it.
The most recent Mezrich book to be turned into a movie is Dumb Money. The Social Network (inspired by The Accidental Billionaires) and 21 are its immediate predecessors. Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker, who wrote Orange is the New Black, penned the film’s script. The film’s director and producer are Craig Gillespie, whose past credits include adaptations of real-life stories including “I, Tonya,” “The Finest Hours,” and “Pam & Tommy.” Producers Aaron Ryder (Ryder Picture Company) and Teddy Schwarzman (Black Bear Pictures) are involved. Executive producers include Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, as well as Angelo Mezrich, Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Andrew Swett, Schuker Blum, Johnny Holland, Kevin Ulrich, and Mezrich and Ulrich. Production on Dumb Money has begun, although there is no confirmed release date as yet.
