The second season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan concludes next week, and according to Deadline, the episode will reveal a new important character who will play a pivotal role in the third season that was renewed by Starz prior to the second season debut. In the second season finale, TV veteran Tony Danza will make his debut as Stefano Marchetti, the Godfather of New York City’s mob scene. Kanan (Makai Curtis), who was raised by his cruel mother Raq (Patina Miller), seems to have conquered the Queens drug market by the time Danza’s character is introduced in Season 2.
When it comes to the New York City mafia drug scene, Marchetti is the most powerful figure. He controls the distribution of goods across the city, insists on being consulted by all pharmacies, and threatens legal action against any who defy him. Kanan’s blatantly ambitious mother is always looking to extend her domain, and Marchetti may present a new and formidable adversary. Starz’s Power was a smash hit for 6 seasons, and its success spawned not one but three spin-offs, of which Raising Kanan is one. This spinoff series reveals the backstory of Kanan (played by Cutis “50 Cent” Jackson) and is set in 1990s Queens, New York.
In the first season, we saw a young Kanan eager to join his family’s criminal company. However, by the end of the year, he had begun to question his life’s purpose after accidentally shooting Detective Howard, who was also his biological father. Starz has been quite pleased with the second season, which saw Kanan return to New York after having fled to Boston in the first. Danza, nominated for an Emmy, is widely known for his roles in the iconic comedies Taxi and Who’s the Boss? Danza has had a career that has been primarily focused on television, despite a few significant film roles. In addition to his guest roles on Rita Rocks, Broad City, and Blue Bloods, he has recently made the jump to streaming with appearances on Hulu’s There’s… Johnny! and Netflix’s The Good Cop.
Danza has been keeping himself busy as of late; a ‘Who’s the Boss?’ reboot is in the works at Amazon Freevee, in which he will reprise his role as a retired major league baseball player, and he is also currently filming the fantasy film Darby Harper Wants You to Know, which will debut on Hulu during the holiday season. Danza was also just added to the cast of Sex and the City’s spinoff, And Just Like That… Other notable actors included in Raising Kanan are Omar Epps, London Brown, Malcolm Mays, Hailey Kilgore, Joey Bada$$, and Shanley Caswell. Showrunner/creator Sascha Penn is joined as EPs by 50 Cent, Courtney A. Kemp, and Mark Canton.
Filming for the next third season has begun in New York, although Starz has not yet said when it will air.
