Get ready to make up some figgy puddings, put up some mistletoe and, oh yes, Call the Midwife, since PBS has just announced that the holiday special for the beloved and long-running series will show on Christmas Day. The holiday special will undoubtedly be a warm and welcoming addition to your holiday festivities. Over a decade, Call the Midwife has aired its eleven seasons. Over the course of its lengthy existence, the show has earned the loyalty of viewers by never failing to deliver stories that are both moving and movingly emotional.
This British series from the ’50s and ’60s centres on a group of London-based midwives. We get an insight into the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth in each episode by following the nurses as they go about their daily business. Throughout its run, the show has featured a revolving door of characters. Jenny Lee, played by Jessica Raine for the first three seasons of the show, eventually left the show after the third season. After she left, the show shifted to an ensemble format, with the spotlight shifting to recurring characters like Helen George’s Trixie Franklin.
Other characters, such as Miranda Hart’s fan favourite Chummy, were also included, despite Hart leaving the show after the fourth season. However, the latest Christmas special could have a big surprise in store for fans. Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner, has been dropping hints about some thrilling new developments in the upcoming special, as reported by Town & Country Magazine. Speaking about the Christmas special, he stated, “[s]tarting with the Christmas special, what I can tell is that there is a comeback of certain known characters from the past, in a very emotional way I think.” While discussing the program’s return to its own past, he said, “I believe [the show] relies on its own history again, but there’s a lot of the pleasure of Christmas as usual, but there’s also a fantastic tale there too and it’s been very delightful to do.”Christmas Day in the US and UK will be the premiere of the Call the Midwife Christmas Special. In the United States, the episode special will be broadcast on PBS, the same network that broadcasts the show’s regular season episodes.
