Fans of James Cameron’s Avatar films can now pre-order a book including concept drawings from the impending sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. The video and accompanying book, titled “The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water,” will be released on December 16 for $50. The cover of the book has a stunning illustration of a whale-like monster, or tulkun, emerging from the waters of Pandora with a young Na’vi, most likely one of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldana) offspring.
Those who saw the theatre re-release of the original Avatar may recall the tulkun from a scene at the conclusion of the credits, where it received assistance from one of the new characters. How this sequence is really portrayed in the film remains to be seen, but if the concept art is any indicator, the tulkun and the young Na’vi will build a strong friendship as the plot progresses. Tara Bennett has authored the future book. A foreword to the book is written by Robert Rodriguez, who directed Cameron’s previous film Alita: Battle Angel.
Preorders for DK’s “Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary” can be placed in tandem with the book’s final publication. The book, written by Joshua Izzo, will act as an encyclopaedia for the future film, providing in-depth accounts of the novel species, technologies, landscapes, and civilizations included in the sequel. The book, which will retail for $30 like “The Art of Avatar: The Way of Water,” will be available for purchase on December 16. The 2009 release of the first Avatar film was a worldwide phenomenon, setting several box office records and becoming the first picture in history to earn over $2 billion throughout the world.
The film’s intricate world-building, groundbreaking use of 3D, and jaw-dropping visual effects won over reviewers and moviegoers alike, despite some complaints about the film’s reliance on traditional narrative beats. This film is now the highest-grossing film of all time, a position it has solidified with its recent theatre re-release, which brought its worldwide total to $2.9 billion. Cameron’s science fiction epic has been a commercial and critical triumph, therefore a sequel has been in the works, off and on, for quite some time. In the sequel, the waters of Pandora will finally be explored, promising fans a return to the stunning planet they’ve been waiting for for the past 13 years.
Whether the sequel can duplicate the popularity of the original film remains to be seen, but if the newly unveiled imagery is any indicator, Avatar: The Way of Water will offer moviegoers plenty of visual delights when it debuts exclusively in cinemas in a couple of months. Avatar: The Way of Water bursts into theatres on December 16, and the book will appear the following day.
