Hiram Garcia, the producer of Black Adam, has hinted at potential future developments for Henry Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU. Garcia also discussed the film’s reintroduction of the Man of Steel in an interview with CinemaBlend. Before this, it wasn’t clear if Cavill will continue as Superman in the DCEU. When he left the role, it was for Justice League. Superman had a cameo appearance in the 2019 film Shazam! without his head being in view. In the season finale of HBO Max’s Peacemaker, the figure made another cameo, however this time he remained in the background.
Garcia mentioned casting Cavill in the part once again during the interview. He wanted to come back, we wanted him to come back, and we wanted to make sure that his character is canon with Black Adam, so we did our best to do that, as Garcia put it. While Superman does make an appearance at the conclusion of Black Adam, Garcia speculated on what the future held for both Cavill’s Man of Steel and Johnson’s antihero. “It’s never been about a one-time thing or a single battle,” Garcia explained.
What’s more, he elaborated: “Absolutely not; there’s much more to it than that. The long-form narrative we hope to create will demonstrate that these two individuals share a world and will frequently interact with one another, whether on the same or opposing sides. Eventually, I’m sure, they’ll have a run-in, but this isn’t going to be settled in one brawl. We certainly didn’t envision ourselves doing that. That’s not giving back to the supporters. Fans are interested in experiencing a shared journey between these characters since they share a universe.”
Man of Steel, the first film in the DC Extended Universe, starred Henry Cavill as Superman and was directed by Zack Snyder in 2013. Later, in 2016, he reprised the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was announced this week that a sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel is in the works. Charles Roven, who has produced several previous films in the DCEU including Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, will be the film’s producer. It was in the 2010 DC Showcase animated short Superman/Shazam! : The Return of Black Adam that we first saw Black Adam face off against Superman, voiced by George Newbern and Arnold Vosloo respectively. Black Adam is slated to be released on Friday. If you’re interested in watching Cavill in the role of Superman before, you may do it on HBO Max right now.
