Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are currently in talks with prospective filmmakers for a new Twister film. It is expected that filming for Frank Marshall’s Twisters sequel would begin in the spring of 2019. There’s also the possibility that one of the film’s primary characters may make a return appearance. According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg was the driving force behind the accelerated production schedule. After reading Mark L. Smith’s draught for the Twister sequel, Amblin’s director, producer, and screenwriter were all enthused about making the film.
Universal Pictures will be in charge of the film’s creative direction, with Warner Bros. contributing financially. The film is now without a director but production is set to begin in the spring. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski was supposed to oversee Twisters, but he dropped out last year to focus on Apple’s planned Formula One racing movie starring Brad Pitt. Multiple award-winning filmmakers are being discussed, and producers are actively talking with them. Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi, who directed the 2018 Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo, are two such filmmakers, as is Dan Trachtenberg, who directed and wrote the film Prey.
There’s also Travis Knight, who helmed Missing Link, Kubo, the Two Strings, and Bumblebee. Producers have shown interest in having Helen Hunt, who appeared in the first Twister, return for the sequel. Doctor Jo Harding (Hunt), a seasoned storm-chaser, must collaborate with her soon-to-be ex-husband Bill (the late Bill Paxton) to devise an alert system solution to warn residents of the incredibly deadly tornadoes headed their way in the original film. Fans are hoping that Hunt will reprise her role as Dr Harding in the sequel to Twisters, this time playing the mother of the protagonist.
The story will centre on the storm-chasing adventures taken by Bill and Jo’s daughter. Hunt had previously attempted to sell the concept of a Twister sequel in which she would serve as co-writer and director, but the plan fell through because an unidentified company declined to fund the project. It is hoped that Twisters will be as successful as its predecessor, but no more information about the film’s premise, cast, or crew has been made public. More than $494 million was made from the original picture, and it inspired Universal to build an attraction at one of its theme parks.
The cast of Twister also included Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, and Jeremy Davies, in addition to Hunt and Paxton. Filmmaker Jan De Bont worked with the late Michael Crichton on the screenplay. The debut of Twisters has not yet been announced. You can watch Twister on Hulu right now.
