Tom Hanks’ sustained popularity as an American favourite actor comes on the heels of his Oscar-winning turns in the films Elvis and Pinocchio. Unfortunately, it seems like we have a few more weeks to wait until he returns to the theatres. The initial December release date for A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks’ next film, has been pushed back to a wide release on January 13, 2023. The novel “A Man Called Ove” by Swedish writer Fredrik Backman served as inspiration for the film. Hanks will play the title character, Otto, a sour old guy who takes joy in passing judgement on and being cruel to his neighbours.
The “very pregnant” Marisol, a new neighbour with her small family, and Otto strike up an odd connection, and Otto’s harsh façade begins to crack. In addition to Hanks, the cast includes Mariana Trevio, Rachel Keller, Cameron Britton, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Trevio is a well-known Mexican actress who has acted in several films and most recently can be seen in the Netflix series Once Upon a Time… But Not Anymore, which is available in both Spanish and English. Recently, Keller co-featured in the HBO Max series Tokyo Vice, and he has acted in the critically acclaimed series Fargo and Legion. In David Fincher’s Mindhunter, Britton starred as American serial murderer Edmund Kemper, which was his breakthrough performance.
Aside from those shows, he has also guest-starred in others, such as Barry, The Umbrella Academy, and Shrill. Actor and comedian Garcia-Rulfo has recently been seen in The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix, and he has previously acted in such blockbuster movies as Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Murder on the Orient Express, and The Magnificent Seven.
Marc Forster is in charge of the film, A Man Called Otto, while David Magee adapted Backman’s story for the screen. Films directed by Forster, such as Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland, and The Kite Runner, earned him a nomination for the British Academy Film Award. Magee has been nominated twice for an Academy Award for his writing, for both Life of Pi and Finding Neverland.
Mary Poppins Returns, The School for Good and Evil, and Disney’s impending live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid are just a few of the numerous films he has written. Hanks produces A Man Called Otto alongside Rita Wilson, Gary Goetzman, and Fredrik Wikström Nicastro. Executive producers include not just Forster, but also Renée Wolfe and David Magee. On December 25, the movie A Man Called Otto will have a limited release in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide on January 13, 2023.
