Synopsis for Chapter 273
The realisation that he has altered the past and saved his brother causes Shinichiro to break down as he learns that Manjiro is now in middle school. Soon after Mikey leaves the business, Haruchiyo enters and explains that he remembers both the original and alternate versions of events. After explaining to Haruchiyo how he acquired his time-travelling abilities and the lengths to which he went to get them, Shinichiro says his goodbyes, but not before he has the youngster swear that he won’t tell anyone else. At a later time, while Shinichiro ponders what to do with his newfound abilities, he encounters a young kid who is fighting off three bullies in middle school in order to protect his friend. Shinichiro intervenes after the youngster has been severely beaten, which causes the bullies to flee. It was Takemichi Hanagaki, attempting to rescue Tachibana Hinata, who was revealed to be the young man.
Takemichi, inspired by Shinichiro, seeks the hero’s advice on how he might emulate his heroic actions. With Hinata and Kisaki looking on, Shinichiro takes the youngster by both hands and transfers his powers to him, feeling regret for his treatment of the elderly man and recalling that it is possible to give away the power. Takemichi, he says, can always count on this strength when a desperate need to save someone arises. Then, in chapter 273 of Tokyo Revengers, we jump back to the present, where Wakasa and Mikey have just finished spilling the beans to a shocked Takemichi. Observations
Readers who are familiar with Naoto will know that both the trigger and the time-leaper can recall every past life they have lived. However, it’s not obvious if the trigger would recall the altered history if it wasn’t his time traveller who made the alteration. However, Sanzu can tell just how much of the past Takemichi has changed by observing his acts and perspective towards him. Tokyo Revengers 273 claims that Shinichiro was the motivation for Takemichi. The fact that Kisaki is at the playground shows that he is related to the protagonist and Manjiro through his brother.
Given that Shinichiro never articulated the power he gave to Takemichi, it is puzzling how Kisaki knew about time leaping in the first place. Similarly, it is unclear what role Hanma plays in time travel. Shinichiro knows he could have gained the ability to time travel without murdering the elderly man, but his conversation with Haruchiyo makes it sound like killing is the only option. Also, Shinichiro eventually told Wakasa everything, but it’s not clear if Takeomi or Benkei were in on the secret as well. There’s a beautiful lyrical twist when Shinichiro and Takemichi both use their power to save the same person, but they have no idea it’s the same person.

It’s strongly indicated that Haruchiyo sought to steal Takemichi’s time-leaping ability because she thought the only way to stop someone from using it was to murder them. In any case, the push that began this tale was the realisation that severe shock seemed to be the ignition for time travel in the lack of a Trigger.
