The moviegoing public appears to agree that there is something about the fall that makes them desire to watch horror films. Paramount Pictures’ latest horror film, Smile, has generated over $100 million at the worldwide box office in less than two weeks after its debut. After debuting at No. 1 in 15 areas, it quickly rose to No. 1 in 24 markets by the end of its second week, marking a major milestone. Sosie Bacon (Dr Rose Cotter) is a therapist that everyone in Smile looks up to. As a result of witnessing the death of a patient she was caring for, Rose experiences terrifying paranormal phenomena.
If she wants to make it through this, she has to face her history. Parker Finn, who makes his directorial debut with Smile, wrote the screenplay and also directed the film. Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert, Caitlin Stasey, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan are among the film’s cast members. Smile’s huge success at the box office made it Paramount Pictures’ sixth #1 film of the year. In its first two weeks, it earned approximately $55 million in the United States alone and another almost $47 million from elsewhere. There have been $102.3 million in sales so far throughout the world.
The United Kingdom, Mexico, Germany, France, and Australia are some of the film’s major foreign markets. Brian Robbins, CEO and President of Paramount Pictures, had this to say about the film’s financial success: As soon as we saw the first trailer for this picture, we knew it had huge box office potential, and we couldn’t be happier or happier that moviegoers all around the world seem to agree with us. We owe a debt of gratitude to our filmmaker Parker Finn, our creative collaborators, and the rest of the production team for making such a horrific film, and to our worldwide marketing and distribution teams for, once again, knocking it out of the park.
The success of the film has been widely attributed to the viral marketing effort that sparked it. Actors “smiling menacingly” at high visibility locations, such as behind home plate at broadcast baseball games, were part of the programme. Short clips featuring these actors rapidly went viral, helping to promote the picture further. As we approach the Halloween holiday, cinemas are still showing Smile.
