The short tale “The Caretaker” by Marcus Kliewer will soon be adapted into a film, and Deadline says that Sydney Sweeney will play the lead role and serve as an executive producer. After a heated bidding war, the film’s distribution rights were won by Universal. The story revolves around a young lady who applies for and gets a caretaker job she discovered on Craigslist, only to find that it’s much more than she bargained for.
Netflix is adapting Kliewer’s Reddit tale of the same name (he also penned the narrative We Used to Live Here on the site), however, specifics regarding the film’s premise are few.
The Caretaker has an intriguing and possibly interesting idea, and with a superb actor at its heart, it may be a fascinating picture to look forward to when it finally comes out. The director of The Caretaker has not been announced, although Karl Gajdusek, who co wrote The King’s Man, is set to adapt the script. Sweeney will not only play a major role in the film, but he and co-star Jonathan Davino will also produce it through their company, Fifty-Fifty Films. Michael Bay, together with Brad Fuller and Scott Glassgold of Ground Control, will be producing The Caretaker under his Platinum Dunes label.
Executive Vice President of Production at Universal, Matt Reilly and Creative Executive Jacqueline Garell will be in charge of the film’s production. Sweeney was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work in the popular series Euphoria. A second Emmy nomination came her way for her performance in The White Lotus, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Adding to the momentum of her career, Sweeney will co-star with Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) in an unspecified role in Sony’s Madame Web film, based on the character from Marvel Comics.
Tony Tost, who wrote and will direct the upcoming film National Anthem, has cast her as one of the lead characters. In addition to the eventual release of The Caretaker, Sweeney will also produce and appear in a remake of Barbarella with Sony Pictures. The Registration, a dystopian thriller adapted from a novel by Madison Lawson, will also feature her work with Sony. No official release date has been given for The Caretaker as of yet, as production is still in its infancy.
