It’s one thing to run into an ex-lover, but quite another to end up living with both of them and their new significant others. She Is Love, the latest romantic drama from director Jamie Adams, redefines the word “awkward.” The film’s trailer, published by Signature Entertainment, features leads Haley Bennett and Sam Riley as exes who reconnect decades after breaking up. Even worse, she made the reservation at the rural hotel her ex operates with his new girlfriend. In the preview, Patricia (Bennett) is surprised to learn that her ex-lover Idris (Riley) owns and operates the hotel she booked in Cornwall with his current girlfriend, Louise (Marisa Abela). Idris’ “past and future are all under one roof,” and things rapidly become uncomfortable.
They reconcile their shared history after being apart for over a decade. The question is whether or not his existing girlfriend will approve of his new relationship. The trailer for She Is Love, which portrays love as “funny, sweet, beautiful, unfair, terrible, and wreckless” all at once, already radiates a wistful air from a bygone relationship, indicating that you never completely let go of the past but rather learn to grow and recover from it. The director and producer of Black Mountain Poets and Pink Wall have proven his mastery in the romantic drama genre, for which he received a BIFA nomination.
Bennett has been in highly praised films such as Swallow, The Girl on the Train, The Devil All the Time, and Cyrano, while Riley has been nominated for a BAFTA and starred in Control, Maleficent, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Abela has also been expanding her resume with credits in films including Industry, Rogue Agent, Five Dates, and the forthcoming fantasy comedy Barbie. She Is Love has a strong director and cast, so it should be enjoyable when it finally arrives in theatres next year. The film will have its world debut on Friday at the BFI London Film Festival and will be distributed in theatres and on digital platforms on February 3, 2023.
