This weekend sees the premiere of Rosaline, a fresh take on the Romeo and Juliet story from Hulu and 20th Century Studios. A fair number of promos and snippets giving a taste of the romantic comedy have already been released. 20th Century Fox has released yet another fresh movie clip as the last countdown nears. This new trailer, like the ones that came before it, focuses on the film’s main plot. This time, we get a more in-depth look at Rosaline’s (Kaitlyn Dever) plan to woo Romeo (Kyle Allen) back from his cousin Juliet’s (Emma Stone) embrace (Isabela Merced).
Early sequences remind viewers of how Rosaline got to be in this predicament, with the boy loving the girl, the boy finding a new female, and the girl trying to win the boy back. What follows is Rosaline putting into action her plan to win back Romeo’s affection, and it looks like she’s planning to resort to some really extreme measures to do so. This trailer, like the ones before it, emphasises Rosaline’s predicament, but it also places greater emphasis on the pain and unrequited feelings she endures throughout the film. There are echoes of William Shakespeare’s original story, but this time around Romeo doesn’t feel his love is returned when he meets Juliet.
The video footage also shows that despite appearances to the contrary, Rosaline is not completely emotionless. In contrast to the original play, the protagonist of Rosaline is given more screen time in this adaptation. Since her ex-boyfriend Romeo has just met Juliet, she is a young Roman who has just ended an engagement. Rosaline, devastated by the news, is more determined than ever to win back Romeo.
In order to achieve this goal, she intends to destroy the new couple at every opportunity before she finally loses Romeo forever. The film is adapted from Rebecca Serle’s novel When You Were Mine. The script was written by Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter (The Disaster Artist, The Fault in Our Stars), and HBO Max’s Starstruck director Karen Maine was brought on board to helm the project. Emily Morris, together with co-executive producers Dever, Neustadter, and Weber, created the show. Producing duties were shared among Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine. Other actors in the film include Bradley Whitford, Minnie Driver, Christopher McDonald, Sean Teale, Nico Hiraga, Henry Hunter Hall, and Alhaji Fofana.
This Friday, October 14, is the launch of Rosaline on Hulu.
