Just wait a few more days, and The Winchesters, the prequel series to Supernatural, will be available for fans to dive back into the world of the show. Fans of the original series are ecstatic about the new CW show because it explores the origins of Sam and Dean Winchester, focusing on their parents John and Mary. There have been two incarnations of John and Mary’s characters, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Matt Cohen, and Samantha Smith and Amy Gumenick, during the span of the show’s 15-season run (2005-2020). While the series’ legion of fans may think they know everything there is to know about the characters, a new clip from the forthcoming movie shows there is much more to learn.
Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles, stars of the original series, created The Winchesters, with the help of Supernatural alum and showrunner Robbie Thompson. In a recent interview, the three of them discussed the time and effort required to cast the lead roles, revealing that they spent 30 hours reviewing chemistry reports before settling on Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly. The new trailer begins with Rodger saying, “The narrative begins when John leaves Vietnam and returns to his community in Kansas.” John’s decision to raise his boys as hunters and his vengeance for Mary’s death by a demon six months after Sam was born were established in the first season of Supernatural.
Donnelly describes her as follows: “Mary is a seasoned hunter who fights frequently.” With her two best pals, Latika and Carlos, she fights against demons and monsters. These two new characters will join Mary and John in exploring the paranormal in the new series. Actress Nida Khurshid describes her character, Latika Dar, as “extremely book smart,” which is appropriate given the requirement for someone who can research various monsters and demons in order to defeat them. Although Jonathan “Jojo” Fleites describes the next series as “the unsung love tale of John and Mary,” Carlos is described as “fearless in the face of peril but yet at the same time he’s a great boost of positivity.”
So far, The Winchester’s marketing has led us to believe that the show would attempt to counteract the otherworldly horrors with a welcome sense of camaraderie among its four leads, and we couldn’t be more excited. John’s mom Millie Winchester, played by Bianca Kajlich, is “a touch rough around the edges,” in her words. We get the impression from the previews that she is both overjoyed to see her son again and keen to advise him against demon hunting. According to the actor, the next series would have “part thriller, part monster narrative, part relationships, and family and friends.”
Actress Demetria McKinney, who portrays rare books store owner Ada Monroe, had this to say about the show: “The tone is wonderful, the premise is original, and you have an opportunity to get a very fantastic ride into the past to see where the beginning began.”
The CW premiered The Winchesters on October 11.
