Rian Johnson, director of the Netflix film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, announced on Twitter that the film has secured an unprecedented arrangement with major exhibitors AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, all of which will be releasing the film on Thanksgiving. The filmmaker has stated that the premiere of Knives Out 2 will take place from November 23rd to November 29th and that this will be a “sneak peek run” before the film is made available on streaming services on December 23rd. There will be a 30-day interval between the film’s theatrical release and its streaming release, despite the fact that it will not be in cinemas for the full 30-day period.
In addition to over 600 domestic U.S. cinemas, the film will open in international markets including Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Israel, Australia, and New Zealand. When it comes to Glass Onion’s box office performance, it’s unclear if Netflix will provide the numbers. After receiving rave reviews and Oscar buzz at its TIFF debut, Netflix is giving the sequel to Knives Out a major theatrical release. Additionally, the film has a 90% rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Since the first Knives Out film was so highly received and earned Johnson an Oscar nomination, audiences are likely to be even more enthusiastic about seeing the sequel in theatres.
The first Knives Out was similarly released by Lionsgate around the time of Thanksgiving 2019; it had a 5-day opening of $41.4M and eventually grossed $165.3M in the United States. In a statement, Johnson commented on the news drop, saying, My heart leaps for joy at the news that Netflix has collaborated with AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to bring Glass Onion to cinemas for a special sneak look. I can’t wait to experience the excitement of the audience watching GLASS ONION, as these films are designed to do. When the film debuts here and on Netflix in December, viewers all across the world will finally be able to see it.
