exclusive sneak peek at the terrifying new Paramount+ thriller Significant Other, starring It Follows’ Maika Monroe and The White Lotus’ Jake Lacy. They play a young couple whose excursion across the Pacific Northwest’s uncharted wilderness is wrecked when they discover they may not be alone. The scene depicts the moment when Harry (Lacy) sets out into the night to locate Ruth after the couple had become separated (Monroe). Although the clip only lasts a little over a minute, it successfully conveys the film’s intended mood of unease and anxiety. Harry grabs his lantern and makes his way carefully into the woods, shouting for Ruth.
It’s so dark in the woods that his lantern’s light can’t reach that far; he feels as though anything may appear out of the shadows at any moment. A weird, otherworldly sound plays in the background as the camera steadfastly focuses on a single area of darkness in the woods, creating the impression that something is following him. After yelling one more time, Harry turns around to see Ruth standing behind him, holding his knife. The clip’s conclusion is particularly unnerving when seen in the context of the trailer that was released earlier this month. Ruth’s face of terror and the fact that she is still holding the knife in front of her as Harry approaches both points to an external threat. Worse even would be if that wasn’t Ruth at all.
The Ruth Harry sees in the woods may be the duplicate that has been following him when he and his wife stumbled upon her double in a cave containing a chemical that could only have come from another planet. A chilling finishing touch to the picture is her eerie quiet when she is discovered. Significant Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, whose previous film was 2019’s comedy horror Villains, are the filmmakers behind Other. In this version, Bill Skarsgard takes the place of Kevin Spacey, and he and Monroe play a criminal couple who get more than they bargained for when they steal a pair of nasty homeowners with secrets to conceal.
It was in 2020 that Berk and Olsen first discussed working together on a film, and by 2021, Paramount had won a bidding war for the rights to their newest collaboration. This time around, Dana Fainaru and Hamish Wright served as executive producers, while Dan Kagan contributed as a producer. Paramount+ will air the first episode of Significant Other on October 7, but on October 6 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, the film will be shown at New York Comic Con in Room 401 of the Javits Convention Center, followed by a panel discussion with the actors and crew.
