Ti West’s Pearl, one of the finest horror films of the year and a secret prequel to his X-universe franchise, is finally making its way to theatres. The renowned and brutal picture, starring Mia Goth as the title murderer with aspirations of celebrity, releases on Blu-ray and DVD on November 15 from A24 and Lionsgate. For the collectors out there, Walmart will also be carrying a special Blu-ray packaging featuring all new packaging art. Set in 1918, Pearl is the prequel to X, in which viewers encountered an elderly but likeable killer named Pearl. She has no choice but to stay on the farm with her parents, where she takes care of her sick father and her overprotective mother.
Her life on the farm and her missing spouse has driven her to fantasise about leaving everything behind and becoming a movie star. She will stop at nothing to achieve her dream of becoming a household name and a household name among fans, and this uncompromising ambition drives her to resort to violence. The film adds another dimension to X’s legendary murderer while letting Goth shine once again as the main lady in a very nasty form, but it is less of pure horror and more of a technicolour psychological thriller that digs into the psychology of Pearl and her need to be wanted. Two featurettes, “Coming Out of Her Shell: The Creation of Pearl” and “Time After Time,” are the disc’s most noteworthy bonus materials. After all of the trouble West went to in order to keep Pearl under wraps, the story of how the picture came to be made is the stuff of Hollywood mythology and it should be interesting to learn about.
Even though he has already talked about the process, detailing how everything swiftly came together after production concluded on X, it will be fascinating to witness behind the scenes and hear from the actors and crew about the challenges they faced. The teaser and full theatrical trailer will be accessed concurrently with the featurettes. Also featured in Pearl are David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Mathew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro, in addition to Goth. Not only did Goth get to star in her first feature picture, but she also got her start in filmmaking as a co-writer alongside West.
She has become somewhat of a focal point in his new horror world, portraying both Maxine, the final female in the X films, and MaXXXine, the final film in the trilogy, ten years after a disastrous pornographic shoot. Given the huge success of its two predecessors and Pearl’s 89% critical and 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s no surprise that anticipation for the third picture is over the roof. Fans may get Pearl on DVD for $29.96 or on Blu-ray for $39.99, with all three formats included.
