Fans of the original Black Christmas will be pleased to hear that Scream Factory will be releasing the film in 4K UHD. In keeping with the film’s seasonal theme, this release will arrive in time to give to your favourite horror buff as a stocking stuffer for Christmas.
There will be two special editions of the film available to fans: one with an original poster, and the other with both the poster and a limited edition enamel pin set with five pins depicting memorable scenes from the film.
The first disc is the restored 4K version of the film with audio and soundtrack, the second disc is a 4K scan of the original camera negative with an audio commentary from director Bob Clark and actors John Saxon, Keir Dullea, and Nick Mancuso, and the third disc is a collection of bonus materials including photo galleries, alternate title sequences, original TV and radio spots, the original theatrical trailer, and a midnight screening Q&A with C. Thomas Howell. Katie Cassidy, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lacey Chabert, and Michelle Trachtenberg starred in the remake of Black Christmas that was released in 2006.
The film was directed by Glen Morgan. It was remade again in 2019 with Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O’Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, and Cary Elwes in the lead roles, and it was directed by Sophia Takal. Both films stick closely to the original plot, which follows a bunch of sorority sisters as they are harassed by a serial murderer and stalker who is determined to be bad instead of good. 1974’s Silent Night, Evil Night was based on the urban tale of a guy in the attic and a lone babysitter in a house.
There are several familiar faces in the cast, including Olivia Hussey, Dullea, Margot Kidder (who played Lois Lane in the first Superman movies), Andrea Martin, Marian Waldman, Griffin, and Saxon. Clark directed another holiday film, A Christmas Story, which was much lighter in tone. Of course, Ralphie’s joy at getting his Red Ryder BB rifle isn’t replicated in Black Christmas. On December 6, just in time for the holidays, Black Christmas will be available in 4K. Pre-orders for both versions are currently being accepted at the Shout Factory.
