The lifetime IMAX box office for “Avatar” now totals $268 million, thanks to the film’s re-release

The Avatar re-release brought in an extra $3 million over the weekend, bringing the total IMAX earnings for the film to an astounding $268.6 million. The Avatar re-release generated over $15 million in the United States and almost $40 million internationally, reiterating the fact that there is a committed audience for filmmaker James Cameron’s science fiction movie. Avatar: The Way of Water is set to be released in December.
Only 18% of this weekend’s worldwide box office came from IMAX theatres. A domestic total of around $4.7 million put the re-release in fifth place.

It has earned approximately $780 million domestically so far, making it the fourth highest grossing picture of all time after Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814 million), Avengers: Endgame ($858 million in 2019), & Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million in 2015). With more than $2.9 billion in the bank, Avatar has maintained its lead as the highest-grossing picture of all time. The release of “Endgame” temporarily displaced it from the top slot, but a re-release in China in 2021 helped it regain its former glory. The worldwide total for Endgame is now $2.797.2 million. The Force Awakens ($2.06 billion), Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion), and Titanic ($2.2 billion) join another Cameron picture in the top five all-time lists. An epic tale of colonisation and revolution, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver in the year 22nd century.

Cameron’s interest in environmental issues was paired with his technological expertise in this film. Cameron famously stated years ago that he could imagine himself creating just Avatar movies for the rest of his career, but he recently acknowledged that the future of the franchise will depend on how well The Way of Water performs in theatres. Recent estimates put The Way of Water’s domestic box office total at roughly $649 million, which would be lower than the original’s domestic gross before adjusting for inflation. Video-on-demand sales are predicted at $425 million, with streaming earnings at $214 million. According to The Numbers, a website that tracks box office data, the first picture made roughly $430 million from home video sales in the United States over a decade ago.

There are two more tentpoles that The Way of Water will have to compete with: Warner Bros.’s Black Adam and Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell, and Vin Diesel are just some of the newcomers to the cast of The Way of Water. The Way of Water, which is set to be released on December 16th, was filmed alongside Avatar 3; two additional sequels have been confirmed.
