In a setting like AMC, it’s okay to feel sad. Because Nicole Kidman said so. If you’ve gone to an AMC cinema recently, you’ve probably seen the commercial that’s sweeping the nation. The commercial, which portrays Kidman making her way through the rain to the movies and gushing about how much she enjoys seeing her favourite characters on the big screen, has become something of a cultural touchstone, eliciting applause and a standing ovation in certain areas. (At least, that’s how it works in the Big Apple.) And now, thanks to Saturday Night Live, we can all laugh at how much we like it. Chloe Fineman, as Kidman, walks through the rain and says all of Kidman’s lines from the original commercial (with a few asides to herself) before being joined by other audience members in the theatre (which is new since it was just Kidman in the one that plays in AMC theatres).
Then, as she continues to talk, her strength increases, and she rises above the movie theatre and the people honouring her. I mean, that’s presumably what happens to Kidman every time the commercial airs and someone claps or gets up to applaud it. Even though presenter Miles Teller wasn’t included in this skit, it’s still worth mentioning since, by this point, who doesn’t know the AMC ad by heart? People who don’t often attend the movies, presumably, but you get the point.
It’s no surprise that Saturday Night Live would make a joke about it now because it’s become somewhat of a craze and has only gotten worse throughout the summer. When will we see Nicole Kidman in another commercial, and what can we expect from her? When can we expect to see Australian actress Nicole Kidman out in public, where she may be praised by her fellow moviegoers? Maybe. Please incorporate a scene from Moulin Rouge in the next commercial! perhaps even has Ewan McGregor giving a nod to cinema as we all should. If Kidman doesn’t gain superhuman strength and a lightning-based power, then perhaps this won’t happen. We may avoid being completely sincere if we so want.
