Spoiler Alert, the forthcoming romantic comedy from Focus Features, may provide at least part of the holiday cheer you’re hoping for, gay or straight. The film is a biographical movie about the final years in the life of renowned photographer Kit Cowan, and it portrays a wonderful narrative about two men who find love. Even if the teaser doesn’t give too much away, the whole title of the film, “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies in the End,” gives viewers a taste of the heartbreaking agony they’re in for. Michael Ausiello (Jim Parsons) and Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge) are the protagonists of the upcoming film, which will chronicle their romance from the moment they first meet through Kit’s final year of life when he is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The teaser gives a glimpse inside what appears to be more of a tearjerker than a laugh-out-loud rom-com, as seen through Michael’s eyes. This is not to imply that Kit and her partner won’t have happiness as they begin their lives together and learn to cope with Kit’s eccentric parents, portrayed by Sally Field and Bill Irwin. Antoni Porowski (Queer Eye), Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon, Broadway), Jeffery Self, Tara Summers, and Paco Lozano will all make appearances in the film. The Hero Dies, in the End, is based on Ausiello’s memoir of the same name, published in 2017, therefore be warned that there will be spoilers. Ausiello has an extensive resume in the entertainment industry, having worked as a writer for TV Guide for many years and providing commentary for shows including Today, Good Morning America, and Entertainment Tonight.
Michael Showalter, director of the Wet Hot American Summer films, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Search Party, and The Big Sick, is at the helm of this movie. The director’s recent projects include The Dropout on Hulu and The Idea of You, starring Anne Hathaway. The script was written by David Marshall Grant and Dan Savage. Showalter and Jordana Mollick of Semi-Formal Productions, Todd Spiewak and Alison Mo Massey of That’s Wonderful Productions, and others served as producers for the film. Additionally, Parsons creates. Executive producers include Ausiello, Eric Norsoph, and Jason Sokoloff.
New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco will be the first cities to show The Hero Dies in the End on December 2, followed by wider domestic and international releases on December 9 and 16, respectively.
