The first official trailer for Bones And All, directed by Luca Guadagnino, has been released. Two teenage misfits, Lee (Timothée Chalamet) and Maren (Taylor Russell) fall in love as they discover their shared need for human flesh and the challenges of their first experiences with both. The clip, which Chalamet posted to Twitter, gives viewers their first real glimpse at Lee and Maren as a forlorn couple haunted by their animalistic impulses. The chilling clip depicts a montage of the couple steeped in blood while a poetic monologue narrates their urgent desires to “kill the fame.” In one intense scene, Lee is shown breathlessly facing Maren in a field as he asks her, “you don’t think I’m a bad person?” to which Maren responds effortlessly, “all I think is that I love you.”
Lee and Maren go on a killing spree in the last scene as they give in to their worst impulses and wreak havoc on their reel of victims, then the picture cuts to them enjoying a passionate kiss as the narrator says, “maybe love can set you free.” This is a reunion for Chalamet and filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, who he collaborated with on the groundbreaking film Call Me By Your Name. Mark Rylance, Chlo Sevigny, André Holland, and Michael Stuhlbarg also star alongside Oscar nominee Chalamet and winner Russell.
The film, adapted on Camille DeAngelis’s 2015 novel of the same name, debuted earlier this month to a standing ovation that lasted for eight and a half minutes at the Venice Film Festival.
At the festival, Chalamet remarked on how liberating it was to portray a character like himself, a young man trying to find his place in the world. Without passing judgement on it, because if you can find your tribe online, then all the power to you, he added, “it was a comfort to portray people who are dealing with an internal conflict absent the option to go on Reddit or Twitter or Instagram or TikTok to figure out where they belong in.” But I think it’s challenging to be alive now, and I sense a social breakdown is in the air, which just increases the necessity for movies that explore such issues. On November 23, audiences may see Bones And All in cinemas.
