Acclaimed actress Minnie Driver has been added to the cast of the forthcoming prequel miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin. The Witcher has become one of Netflix’s most popular shows. At the TUDUM fan event, the streaming service revealed that Driver would be playing a dual role in Blood Origin, as he will both narrate the series and serve as a key character. According to TUDUM, she will be playing a Seancha, who can “shapeshift” and “gather old lore,” as well as “move across time and worlds.” Her role in the show evolves into that of a “tour guide” for viewers. When discussing Driver’s character in an interview with TUDUM, series co-creator Declan de Barra described him as “basically a collector of stories that are forgotten.”
She thinks it’s important to retell this tale in the contemporary Witcher universe so that we can move on. “Where The Witcher originated from is a big universe, and you need some assistance comprehending that,” Driver remarked, adding that she was “pivotal in helping people grasp where this genesis narrative comes from.” The plot of the prequel is still mostly under wraps. The show, starring Henry Cavill and based on the books of the same name, will be set about 1,200 years before the events of The Witcher. Geralt of Rivia is a ‘Witcher,’ a monster hunter with mystical mutations played by Cavill.
The original show’s premise—a collision of monsters, elves, and humans brought on by the Conjunction of Spheres—is said to have been inspired by events involving ancient elves, which Blood Origin will purportedly investigate. Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain, and Michelle Yeoh (fresh off her performance in the critically acclaimed Everything, Everywhere, All at Once) will all feature in the upcoming film Blood Origin. When the first season of The Witcher was a smashing success in 2019, the announcement of Blood Origin followed suit in 2020. Due to schedule issues, British actress Jodie Turner-Smith had to withdraw from the lead part she had been cast in back in January 2021.
Brown would subsequently take up the lead part, as Éile, a warrior in the Queen’s guard who abandons her background to pursue a career in music. These are just the most recent alterations to Blood Origin, which reportedly underwent extensive reshoots earlier this year. From six, we reduced that to four episodes. Driving in Blood Origin is a departure from her usual projects, but it’s one that’s paid off handsomely for the Oscar-winning actress. The driver has offered her acting skills to a number of important films, including Phantom of the Opera, Goldeneye, and Princess Mononoke, but she is perhaps most remembered for her portrayal in the 1997 classic Good Will Hunting, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award.
The driver is most recognised for her film roles, but she has also won over TV viewers in recurring roles on Will & Grace (NBC) and Speechless (ABC), both of which were cancelled before this project began. There’s no telling how integral Driver will be to Blood Origin’s plot, but since she can basically time-travel, she may appear with Cavill in The Witcher season 3, which premieres in the summer of 2023. On December 25th, you’ll be able to watch The Witcher: Blood Origin on Netflix.
