With the release of Deadpool 3, the Merc with a Mouth will officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, satisfying fans’ desire for a third instalment in the Ryan Reynolds-led superhero franchise. When nothing was announced about the film at Disney’s D23 event, it looked like it would be a while before we heard anything else about the project. However, just two weeks after the event, star Ryan Reynolds took to his official Twitter page to reveal more information about the film than anyone could have imagined.
News that Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine and that the film’s premiere date has been set for September 6, 2024. The tweet in question included a video of Reynolds lamenting the fact that Deadpool 3 didn’t make it to D23 with the caption “Hard keeping my mouth stitched shut about this one,” a reference to the generally negative reception he had as Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009. Given the significance of this character’s introduction to the MCU, the trailer featured a montage of Reynolds talking about the thought process and production of the film.
After much deliberation, Reynolds finally admits, “I have nothing.” There is just one concept. Jackman may be seen walking up the stairs while Reynolds relaxes on his couch. Do you want to play Wolverine with me one more time, Hugh? When asked if he cares, Jackman gives a noncommittal “Yeah, yeah, Ryan” The video concludes with a cover of “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston, with the word “You” substituted with “Hugh,” as the Deadpool logo appears, before it is sliced through by three Adamantium claws, and the September release date is revealed. After making his debut as Wolverine in the 2000 original live-action X-Men film and returning to the role in subsequent sequels, Jackman has become virtually inseparable from the character.
After James Mangold’s critically acclaimed picture in 2017, Jackman announced his retirement from the role. However, it now appears that, like the classic Westerns that served as inspiration for the film that won an Oscar, Jackman will be returning to the role. With Deadpool 3, Jackman will join Wilson (Wade) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time, but it is unclear at this time how significant a part he will play in the picture.
As of now, Jackman is the only other confirmed cast member for the next production. He will be joining Ryan Reynolds and Leslie Uggams. Shawn Levy, who worked with Reynolds on Free Guy and Netflix’s recent The Adam Project, is directing Deadpool 3. The script was written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick. The release date for Deadpool 3 is slated for September 6th, 2024.
