According to a recent statement, Netflix has unveiled a huge number of new cast members for the upcoming series based on the popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which has excited fans as they await the release of the live-action version. The new show will be modelled around the original Nickelodeon cartoon. Princess Yue, spiritual head of the Northern Water Tribe and Sokka’s love interest in the anime series, will be voiced by Amber Midthunder, who most recently appeared in Prey. Starring with A Martinez (Cowboy Bebop) is Pakku, a seasoned water bending expert who remains true to tradition. For her part as Yagoda, the compassionate healer of the Water Tribe who offers herself as a role model to female waterbenders, Disney veteran Irene Bedard, best known for portraying Pocahontas in the eponymous Disney film, will step into the spotlight once again.
The programme also stars Nathaniel Arcand (Heartland) as Chief Arnook of the Water Tribe, Joel Oulette (Ruby and the Well ) as the warrior Hahn, and Meegwun Fairbrother (Burden of Truth) as Avatar Kuruk, a former Avatar with a terrible history. Arden Cho (Partner Track) will play June, a cruel bounty hunter in the Earth Kingdom setting of the programme. For the role of King Bumi of the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu, Aang’s boyhood buddy and mentor in the show, Utkarsh Ambudkar (Ghosts) has been cast. Lucian-River Chauhan (Encounter) will portray Teo, the inventor Danny Pudi’s (Mythic Quest) character who tries to nurture in a world destroyed by conflict, while Pudi will appear as the Mechanist.
The role of the hapless Cabbage Merchant, a vegetable played by James Sie (Stillwater), is legendary. Princess Azula’s best friends, Ty Lee and Mai, will be portrayed by Momona Tamada (Secret Headquarters) and Thalia Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon), respectively, in the new cast including the nefarious Fire Nation. Ryan Mah (The Good Doctor) will portray Lt. Dang, second in command to Commander Zhao, while Ruy Iskandar will play Lt. Jee, the first officer of Prince Zuko’s ship. Starring Hiro Kanagawa (Altered Carbon), Fire Lord Sozin is Ozai’s grandpa.
François Chau (The Expanse) is planned to appear as The Great Sage, the spiritual leader of the Fire Nation who watches over Avatar Roku’s shrine, and C.S. Lee (Dexter) will portray Avatar Roku, a former Avatar of the Fire Nation. The Spirit World’s old yet predatory spirit, Koh, will be voiced by George Takei (Star Trek), while Randall Duk Kim (Kung Fu Panda) will play Wan Shi Tong, the Spirit of Knowledge who takes the guise of an owl. The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has a vast, varied, and talented cast at the core of a renowned and fascinating plot, so it’s something that fans of the animation show should keep an eye out for when it arrives on Netflix in the near future.
