Lee Jung-Jae made history by winning the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Seong Gi-Hun, a guy who battles to make ends meet, in the South Korean survival drama series Squid Game. Along with the news that Season 2 of Squid Game is in the works, fans were treated to an additional treat when Netflix revealed a previously unaired clip with “the man behind the survival game” from the first season of the South Korean smash hit.
At the annual TUDUM international fan event, Netflix screened a last sneak preview presentation of their Korean programming to eager viewers, including a previously unseen segment that began with the show’s writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, expressing his appreciation for the series’ devoted audience. “I’d want to extend my gratitude once again to the devoted Squid Game viewers of Netflix all across the world. Hwang remarked in Korean, “Please look forward to season two, which will be loaded with all fresh storylines,” adding, “But in the meanwhile, I’ve prepared a tiny surprise for the fans waiting for Squid Game Season 2.” The “dramatic unveiling of Front Man,” the show’s main villain, is depicted in the cut scenes, as he is seen toting about a goldfish.
In the second season of Squid Game, the goldfish and the clip will presumably play an important role, while their exact roles are still unknown. Players from low-income backgrounds compete in a deranged tournament including a variety of children’s games over the course of nine episodes. The competition appears to be harmless at first glance, but the losers all perish and the winner receives a whopping $45.6 billion. The South Korean drama exploded onto the scene and rapidly became Netflix’s most popular original series ever.
Earlier this month, it also made headlines by becoming the first programme in a language other than English to win two Emmys. Beyond Lee, the series also starred Jung Ho-yeon, who played Kang Sae-byeok and won an Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor SAG award. Cast members Anupam Tripathi, Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil), Park Hae-soo (The Legend of the Blue Sea), Wi Ha-joon (Midnight), Lee Yoo-Mi (All of Us Are Dead), and Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil) also feature (Hospital Playlist). Squid Game: The Challenge, another Netflix original reality series, will bring together 456 real-life participants to compete for a cash prize of $4.56 million, albeit obviously not in a massacre. Next year, production will begin on the much-anticipated second season of Squid Game, with a launch date of 2024.
