The second season of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix was previewed with a new trailer released as part of this year’s TUDUM event. The spinoff, which is set a century after the original Vikings series, examines the decline of traditional Viking culture as Christianity spreads over the Nordic countries. The first season of Vikings: Valhalla revealed that the Nordic kingdoms have evolved since Ragnar Lothbrok’s (Travis Fimmel) era, with the Viking people being divided between those who worship Odin and the pagan gods and those who turn to Jesus as their saviour. Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) and Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson) are brother and sister who travel to Kattegat to seek revenge on the man who cut a cross into Freydis’ flesh, a symbol of the theological conflict at the core of Viking society.
Leif and Freydis go out to get revenge on the English monarch for the deaths of their people, but they instead become entangled in a new conflict with England. There may be a lot of bloodshed in Vikings: Valhalla, but it seems to be a winning recipe since the first season was seen for a total of 113.38 million hours by Netflix customers in its first week alone. So it’s no surprise that Netflix has ordered two more seasons of Vikings: Valhalla. At the close of Season 1, Leif and Freydis participated in a deadly fight for the protection of Kattegat, and the new clip hints at how Season 2 will examine the strife between various Viking clans.
In the video, Leif and Freydis guide a band of survivors as they flee from a Viking force. After they’ve been trapped on the beach for what seems like an eternity, boats in the fog shoot balls of fire at them. Without revealing who comes to Leif and Freydis’ help, the footage hints that Season 2 will be packed to the brim with exciting battles. Aside from Caroline Henderson and Laura Berlin, Bradley Freegard, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, David Oakes, and Laura Berlin also had significant roles in the first season of Vikings: Valhalla. Michael Hirst and Jeb Stuart, the original show’s creators, reprised their roles as executive producers and showrunner, respectively, for the prequel.
Director Steve Saint Leger, who previously oversaw many episodes of the original Vikings series, also reprised his role in the spinoff. BAFTA winner Niels Arden Plev and Hannah Quinn served as co-directors with Leger. Star Florian Munteanu will make sporadic appearances in Season 2 of Vikings: Valhalla. Munteanu, fresh off his roles as intimidating mountain men in Creed 2 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, plays George Maniakes, a real-life general of the Byzantine Empire who was so tall and imposing that he was sometimes mistaken for a giant. Netflix now has the first season of Vikings: Valhalla. The launch of Season 2 is scheduled for 2023.
