The first official trailer for They Cloned Tyrone, Juel Taylor’s directorial debut with Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris, was released during Netflix’s global fan event TUDUM. The film, which veers between the genres of science fiction and thriller, follows an odd trio as they track down the perpetrators of some nefarious government experiments, evoking the spirit of a 1970s pulp espionage movie. First shown in the clip are Slick Charles (Foxx), Fontaine (Boyega), and Yo-Yo (Parris) travelling in silence on an elevator. When Slick puts a pistol to his mouth and starts singing Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down,” it’s clear that he and the other two aren’t in their usual social element. Yo-presence Yo’s alleviates some of the tension, but Fontaine remains unamused. We’ve been led to believe that this is a funny sketch, but as soon as the elevator doors open, we realise that we’re actually in the middle of a government scandal.
They Replicated to the tune of “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” by the Gap Band. When the three of them enter a sterile laboratory where potentially lethal chemicals are boiling away in vials and beakers, Tyrone wastes no time in getting to work. Fontaine unexpectedly interrogates a lab assistant who is “simply trying to earn an hourly wage” without the assistant’s knowledge.
When the assistant is asked who is running the studies, she responds with an ominous “we’re everywhere.” Images of individuals tied into chairs in experiments reminiscent of those in A Clockwork Orange and a guy taking notes on an official pad while transcribing a recorded phone call appear on the screen. It seems like the three friends have entered the “big leagues,” pitted against the evil U.S. government and its horrific human experimentation. Yo-Yo is adamant that they reveal whatever is going on after discovering a cloned body, but Slick isn’t thrilled about it.
Not much is known about them, but the teaser reveals that they aren’t detectives; how they stumbled across this disaster is a mystery. Even yet, they recruit the aid of companions in order to discover the truth. As the trailer progresses, hundreds more pod-like objects are exposed, suggesting that the conspiracy has gone out of hand and may be impossible to stop. It’s Cloned Foxx’s forthcoming projects include Brad Furman’s action drama Tin Soldier alongside Robert De Niro and Scott Eastwood, and the Netflix original Tyrone, in which he stars opposite Dave Franco. Boyega portrayed King Ghezo in Viola Davis’s historical film The Woman King, which is in cinemas today, and he will play Moses again in Attack the Block 2, a return to his first movie role.
After playing Monica Rambeau in the Disney+ miniseries WandaVision, Parris has been keeping herself busy in the MCU. This time around, she’ll be joining Brie Larson and Iman Vellani as other Super Heroes in Nia DaCosta’s forthcoming sequel The Marvels. After rejoining on the 2021 sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy, Taylor directed and co-wrote the film They Cloned Tyrone with Tony Rettenmaier. Creed II, which starred Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, was also written by Taylor. Foxx, Rettenmaier, and Taylor are the film’s producers, and Poppy Hanks, Jack L. Murray, Dana Sono, and Mark R. Wright are executive producers. Presently, Netflix has not announced when they will debut They Cloned Tyrone.
