The third season of Hulu and FX’s blockbuster series Reservation Dogs has been confirmed. After an Emmy-winning first season last year, the beloved comedy from famed co-creators Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi is currently airing its second season. Next week, on September 28, we will see the conclusion of Season 2. President of Original Programming at FX Nick Grad commented, “Reservation Dogs continues its extraordinary run with reviewers, fans, and awards all acknowledging the distinct genius of the series created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi.” A third season of “One of the most innovative, engaging, and humorous comedies on television” has been ordered by FX and their Hulu partners.
Next year, Hulu will be the exclusive distributor of Season 3, and if the premiere dates of Seasons 1 and 2 are any indicator, we should expect a similar window in early August of 2023. In 2021, Reservation Dogs broke out as a groundbreaking first for indigenous representation because of its fascinating characters that steal the show with their humour and compassion in the series’ most poignant moments and a pioneering crew made up entirely of indigenous creatives. Four native Oklahoma teenagers are the focus of the episode as they attempt to use robbery and savings to go to the legendary, far-off continent of California.
Meanwhile, in Season 2, we found our ragtag group of Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) still grieving the death of their comrade and giving up on their attempts to strike off on their own. Season 1 of the series was a critical success despite being excluded from Emmy consideration this year; it was featured on several best-of lists, won two Independent Spirit Awards, a Peabody, and an AFI Award, and was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe. The second season has also been universally praised, with all critics on Rotten Tomatoes giving it a perfect score.
With an A grade and the comment, “What makes this all work is how the rich characters are interwoven into everything, drawing us deeper into what is both a gorgeous and tragic tapestry of their lives that are still unfolding before us,” reviewer Chase Hutchinson praised the show’s success on the strength of its characters. Harjo and Waititi are not only the show’s creators but also executive producers alongside Garrett Basch’s assistance.
In his personal comment announcing the renewal, Harjo reminisced on the pleasure he had in conceptualising the programme alongside Waititi and the admiration the current season has received, adding: My good buddy Taika Waititi and I have made an incredible show, and I am really pleased with it. It all started with a chat in Taika’s kitchen and has since spread throughout the globe. The support for the second season has been incredible. We’re grateful to FX for renewing for a third season, and we can’t wait to bring you even more laughs and love from the Rez. Ahoooo!
