This past year has been a banner one for sports underdogs. In American Underdog, a dramatisation of a true story starring Zachary Levi: It’s been a fantastic year for team players everywhere, from the release of The Kurt Warner Story to set the stage for 2022 to the FX documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which has shown Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ effort to revitalise a dying football league.
Save Our Squad with David Beckham, an upcoming docuseries on Disney+ features soccer great David Beckham, who, like McElhenney and Reynolds, wants to assist a youth soccer club get promoted to the top level. The streaming platform on November 9, and a preview provided today provide us with a taste of what to expect when the renowned player returns to the fields where he once scored in his youth. East London’s Westward Boys are a collection of young players who are at the end of their rope, but Beckham plans to invest everything he knows in them.
The youngsters watch in wonder as their hero and sports star gives them advice on how to make a free kick. You’ll be delighted to know that Save Our Squad isn’t the only Beckham-fronted docuseries in the works; there are plans for two more. In the summer, Netflix revealed that they will be producing a documentary on the soccer player’s life. The film will be directed by Fisher Stevens and will cover Beckham’s whole life, from playing football to becoming a father.
The film will use archive video to give viewers an inside look at the renowned player’s family life, including his connection with his wife Victoria Beckham and their four children. The success of Save Our Squad is a boon for Disney+’s sports content, which already features in-depth looks at such sports icons as Tom Brady, Dwayne Wade, Peyton and Eli Manning, and many more. Twenty Twenty, winners of both the BAFTA and the RTS, and Beckham’s own Studio 99 are collaborating on the new series.
