Through her Twitter, Brie Larson revealed some brand new production stills from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Larson’s breakthrough role was as the rock band’s lead singer in Edgar Wright’s cult classic, and the new BTS photographs show her attending genuine band sessions to prepare for the part. In the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, played by Michael Cera, the protagonist falls for Ramona Flowers, a lady with a murky history. Everyone has their own demons to face, but Ramona has seven particularly nasty exes that Scott must vanquish like enemies in a video game if he wants to keep dating her. One of Ramona’s exes is Todd Ingram (Brandon Routh), the bass player for the made-up band The Clash at Demonhead, and the movie is exactly as crazy (and great) as it sounds.
One extra layer of complexity is added by the fact that the band’s lead vocalist, Envy Adams (Larson), is also Scott’s ex-girlfriend. One of the most beloved sequences in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is the one at The Clash at Demonhead when Larson covers “Black Sheep” by the real band Metric. Larson’s latest set photos take us back to when she was rehearsing with Metric. Larson tweeted, “We practised like a real band under the direction of [music performance supervisor] Chris Murphy, [music producer] Nigel Godrich, and of course, Metric. And my old pal Tennessee Thomas [the Clash’s drummer] and I got to jam together. We completely dominated in Toronto.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World underperformed at the box office, making only $50 million on an alleged $85 million budget, but it immediately became a cult favourite, amassing an army of dedicated followers. To everyone’s joy, we’ve heard that Wright will be writing the story for and co-producing a sort-of sequel based in the same universe called Seconds. Moreover, anime studio Science SARU is working on a Scott Pilgrim series for streaming service Netflix (Devilman Crybaby). Both of these works are adaptations of the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley that served as the basis for Wright’s film, although it was the latter that helped launch the franchise.
Thus, the new works can’t disregard Wright’s legacy, even if they have nothing to do with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Currently, you may watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on demand at Peacock.
