The arrival of the Disney movie set in a specific haunted house has been postponed. Several planned Disney films, including Inside Out 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King (a computer-animated prequel to the 2019 feature), as well as a live-action adaptation of Snow White, have just been given release dates. The live-action adaptation of The Haunted Mansion has had its premiere date pushed back, joining the other recently announced release dates.
The movie’s debut has been pushed back from March 10, 2023, when the teaser premiered, to August 11, 2023. Rosario Dawson will play Gabbie, a single mother who finds a luxurious property in New Orleans at a price she can afford, in a forthcoming film. Why so much money for a mansion? Haunted, of course. Gabbie recruits a crew to aid her in combating the mysterious forces at work in her home. In this group, Owen Wilson plays the priest, Tiffany Haddish the psychic, Danny DeVito the historian, and Lakeith Stanfield the paranormal specialist.
To be fair, this isn’t the first time Disney has adapted one of its attractions for the big screen; the Pirates of the Caribbean was a huge financial success that led to a cherished six-film franchise. The Haunted Mansion has been adapted on the big screen before; a 1993 film starring Eddie Murphy, Terence Stamp, Nathaniel Parker, Marsha Thomason, and Jennifer Tilly is being followed by a relaunch of the franchise in 2023. Writer/director Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) is at the helm of the Katie Dippold-scripted 2023 version of The Haunted Mansion (The Heat, Ghostbusters).
Dan Levy, Danny DeVito, Winona Ryder, Hasan Minhaj, Jared Leto, who will reportedly play the iconic character from the Disneyland attraction that the film is based on, the Hatbox Ghost, and the iconic final girl herself, Jamie Lee Curtis, as Madame Leota, will also appear in the film alongside the previously announced starring cast members. The release date for The Haunted Mansion has been set for August 11, 2023.
